SanDiego is the second largest county with the highest population in thecity of California in the United States of America. Within thecounty, there are many voluntary organizations that have collaboratedwith some of the construction companies in the region to extend theirservices to the community in which they operate. Some of theseconstruction companies that have collaborated with the organizationsto extend voluntary services to the community include the Turners,DPR and the Mc Carthy construction companies. The companies havesigned contract with most of these organizations to improve the lifeof human beings in San Diego. They involve themselves with thevolunteering activities within the region of San Diego. This hasimpacted the county of San Diego including the community and thegovernment in general. People have decided to put their personalvalues into action whereby they get equipped with the required skillsand experience through the training they receive so as to start theircareer by volunteering. The volunteering work in San Diego has givenmany people an opportunity to give their best efforts back to thesociety. It has also helped in conserving the taxpayers’ dollars. For example from the fiscal year 2015/2016, the volunteering reportshowed that the county of San Diego used 38,398 volunteers to providea value of $39, 891847.32. In additional more than $ 840,775 giftswere donated to the volunteer programs. In our study we used threeconstruction companies to study the various volunteering activitiesthey engage in. From the information gathered, Mike Stanton’scompany was able to gauge its efforts and effectiveness in theprovision of the voluntary services to the community in order toincrease the company’s publicity and its business in general. Thevoluntary services are meant to give the county of San Diego a newlook, create collaborations that will improve the relationshipbetween the community and the company. For example the voluntary willfocus on improving healthy by constructing hospital and homes thusproviding homes for the homeless[ CITATION She14 l 2057 ].Among the three companies, DPR Construction Company has beenrecommended and Mike’s company should emulate its trends inimproving the lives of the people. This is because of its tirelessefforts in helping the community in which it operates. It has formedfoundations that are specifically meant to promote the life of humanbeings. For example, the company holds the health of the community athand, and that is why it has decided to invest heavily in the healthysector by constructing new hospitals, renovating and expanding theexisting ones, a factor that has helped the company to increase itsservices[ CITATION Jan14 l 2057 ].Also, DPR has worked in the education sector through building schoolsand taking concern of the disadvantaged children and families. Ittook an initiative in joining the Baja challenge in building housesfor the homeless. This was a voluntary activity that DPR volunteeredits workers to go and help the communities in constructing housesby sharing their talents.
Originof the Research
SanDiego is one of the counties in California in the United States ofAmerica. The county of San Diego is the second county with thehighest population in the region as per the census statisticscollected in the year 2000. San Diego as a county has mobilizedindividual, communities, and groups to join to form some voluntaryorganizations which are aimed at improving the welfare of humanbeings within the county. Some of the volunteering organizationscollaborate with construction companies in the provision of theseservices. The companies work closely with these organizations and theentire community and government in improving the lives of people andequipping them with the right skills for their well-being in thesociety. Mike’s business also wants to engage with theseorganizations that offer volunteering services to the community. Therefore, he has instructed me as the human resource manager in hiscompany to conduct research and determine the best organization toengage in with in the provision of the voluntary services to thecommunity. His main aim is to increase the business of his companyand create a good corporate image to the public. Therefore, he hasinstructed me to start by analysing three construction companies thatoffer volunteering services in San Diego County. The company involves themselves with volunteering organizationin the provision of essential services in the community. This hashelped in creating a strong team which has promoted harmony, peaceand economic progress within the region (Korngold, 16). Theirinvolvement has been reflected on the impacts that these volunteeringcompanies have produced over time which are visible on the kind oflife the people are leading in the county. The research paper, analyses Turner, DPR and Mc Carthy constructional company in SanDiego and the various volunteering activities they engage in.Further, the paper intends to collect useful information that willdetermine the types of volunteering services that Mike Stanton’sbusiness can engage so as to create publicity and increase hisbusinesses in the community.

Theresearch is intended to identify the various volunteering servicesoffered in the county of San Diego. The information required iscollected through interviewing the three real construction companiesin the area that offer volunteer services. The information gatheredwill be used to advice Mike Stanton’s company by determining thekind of volunteer services that the company should offer. They also enjoy free admissions to various history centers, and some extent they are charged low discounts as compared to therest. They help to build the community and the government in general. In our research, we will be studying three volunteering constructioncompany in San Diego. The selected case will consist of the Turner,DPR and the Mc Carthy volunteering construction companies.
1.Turner Construction Company
Henry Turner was the founder of the Turner Construction Company over113 years ago. The founder based his core values on teamwork, commitments, and integrity to propel the progress of the company.Currently, the company is known globally, and the people uphold theintegrity of the company’s mission and vision as stated by thefounder in the provision of quality services to the clients. It hasplayed a significant role in building partnerships within the SanDiego community and providing essential resources such as theschools, hospitals, workplaces and the social, cultural centers. Thefounder of the company always insisted on the hard work andresponsiveness to the needs of their clients. He advocated for thepractice of service delivery in its operations. Up to date, thecompany has lived to its vision making it gain competitive advantagesover the others. This has resulted in the company’s ability inaddressing changing conditions, serving diverse markets, and alsoexpanding its services which have resulted in its growth. Turner hasdesigned several projects that the company wants to build andrenovate. For example, the central library, the conventional centerexpansion and the extreme makeover of the airport (Janelle) are somebut a few of the projects that Turners is working on[ CITATION Rob15 l 2057 ].
TurnersConstruction Company is committed to helping the community in whichit operates. It does this by improving the education levels andembracing the volunteering programs. Turners Construction Company hassupported and continued to support some organizations. Theseorganizations include Habitat for Humanity, rebuilding together, Toysfor Tots and the youth force 2020 and the Turner school ofconstruction management. The Turner school of management offers freecourses which are taught by volunteer teachers from the company. Theyhave been designed to help the minority and other businessenterprises owned by women so as to improve their managerial andadministrative skills.
Turnerhas played a critical role in redefining the San Diego land to giveit a new look over the last forty years. It constructed the tallestand complex government subsidized house to the west coast and hasopened the space for convention center twice. Also, the TurnerCompany converted an aged athletic club making it the largestmulti-service city into a homeless shelter. Therefore their communityoutreach programs have been widely accepted and acknowledged locallyas a model for the city of San Diego. The main goal for the TurnersConstruction Company is to create collaboration with other firms, women and business enterprise owned by women, veterans and thedisabled so as to help them increase their viability through advancedtechnical skills and market visibility[ CITATION Rob15 l 2057 ].
Aspeople continue praising Turner Company for its major roles it’sdoing it is faced with some problems. For example, the company isfacing stiff competition from the other companies and the change intechnology which is affecting the company in a great way. To reducethese challenges, Turner has devised some ways to approach theproblems. The company advocates for integral planning, collaborationand uninterrupted workflow which gives better results and helps indelivering the projects as per the satisfaction of the client.
Theabove picture is an example of a project carried by Turner inexpanding the GAP’s Brampton Distribution Centre by adding 360,000square foot warehouse to the campus.
2.DPR Construction Company
DPRConstruction Company was formed in the year in 1990. It is located inthe Redwood City in California in the United States of America. DPRis a private company, and it has 21 offices around the United Statesof America. The company is said to specialize in projects that aresustainable and technically complex. These projects include highereducation, life science, and healthcare, advanced technology, andofficial commercial markets.
DPRConstruction Company has a vision of remaining integral and.indispensable to the communities around. They have achieved thisthrough collaborating with the local initiatives that match the needsof the whole community. They utilize the skills and passions of theDPR workers to improve and change the communities. They believe thattheir services are beyond their office territories and thereforeextends them to the workplaces where their team members share withthe community their talents and skills. Apart from putting upbuildings, the DPR construction company offers expertise inorganizational leadership, planning of projects, soft skillstraining, marketing, and other professional areas[ CITATION Rob15 l 2057 ].
Thecompany specifically focuses their energies on new areas that theytarget and make some steps towards exploiting new opportunities. Thevision of the company is always implemented through the volunteeraction at the local level which is spearheaded by the funds from DPRfoundations, offices at the regional level. At the local level, theDPR employees analyze the relationship between the community needsand the skills they possess so that the volunteering resources can befocussed in specific areas.
Majorityof the organizations working with DPR earns a lot of benefits fromthe company’s talents and energy. This helps them to progress andfulfill the community’s visions in a successful manner. Some of theorganizations that DPR works with nationwide include Habitat forHumanity, ACE Monitoring, Youth Build and Rebuilding Togetherorganizations[ CITATION She14 l 2057 ].Below is an image of the DPR workers on a construction site.
3.Mc Carthy Construction Company
Thecompany was established in the year 1864. The company has a longhistory in building houses for individuals facilitating high values. Many communities have been impacted by the voluntary activities ofthe Mc Carthy Company in a positive manner. They believe that theircompany can be located at any point in the region. Mc Carthy Companyhas successfully constructed both single and multi-family homes. Also, commercial and historic rehabilitation projects have beenconstructed with the aim of emphasizing green and sustainableprojects[ CITATION The12 l 2057 ].The company collaborates with their clients through joint venturepartnership and the unique developmental opportunities.
McCarthy Construction Company has spent more than thirty years in SanDiego. Therefore it means that the company has gathered crucialknowledge concerning the communities and the surrounding areas ingeneral. They have provided exceptional and iconic services to theresidents within the areas such as improving the health care, education, life science, commercial and enough parking to theresidents. This has ensured that the community has benefited from thehigh values that are brought as a result of the collaboration withthe community that focuses on quality.
Sincethe early 1990s, the construction company of Mc Carthy has beenconstructing and managing major projects in the county of San Diego. These projects include J. Craig Venter Institute, UCSD Moores CancerCenter, Estancia Hotel and many other projects. The focus of thecompany is to serve the customers in the local community withhigh-quality structures. Below is an image showing machines andequipment used in the Mc Carthy construction company.
Theresearch uses qualitative method to collect data required. During thestudy the survey conducted was mainly concerned with the companies’efforts in engaging with the voluntary organization in San Diego. Istarted by analysing the companies’ vision and mission byinterviewing the authority the factors that prompts them tocollaborate with the community. The survey also tried to look deeplythe reasons behind the engagement with the volunteering organizationsand the benefits realized. The three companies’ scrutinized includeTurner’s Construction Company, DPR Construction Company, and McCarthy Construction Company. The survey also tried to analyze thevarious projects completed by these companies and the ones theyintend to start. For example, DPR demonstrates how young kids got anopportunity to handcraft a special gift for their moms. 85 childrenwere gathered and they aged between 4 and 17 years of age. Also, DPRsurrendered 15 of its workers to join the children in hand-craftingspecial gifts for their moms. All the costs and expenses were cateredby the DPR Company in making the gift. Through the collaboration ofthe children and the employees from the DPR construction company, they had two choices in mind concerning the kind of gifts they wantedto prepare. One they wanted to prepare a planter box which was filledwith flowers or prepare a custom-crafted board that exhibiteddifferent shapes such as those of the whales, pear, leaf or a heart. The coordination was not such easy, but the DPR construction companydid their best in this volunteering activity.
Previewof the Research
Fromthe research conducted, very critical information was gathered. Mostof the volunteer organization had a vivid description of the variouskinds of assistance they wanted. This gave them an easy task incapitalizing the business resources such as the volunteer workers(Korngold, 15). Mike Stanton’s business, therefore, should conductan organizational assessment by involving all the inputs from severalorganizational stakeholders. For example he should involve boardmembers, volunteers, donors, clients, and the staff member who getdirectly involved with the community. These will create and give hima vivid description of the organization’s culture that his businessintends to collaborate with. Mike’s organization can successfullyachieve these through determining the mission, vision, organizationalcapacity and reviewing the key programs. These will help theorganization to design various methods to achieve the mission and thevision through focusing on key programs (Korngold, 17).
AlsoMike should determine the organizational financial viability byensuring that he has a solid financial model. He can achieve thesethrough narrowing down those programs that have the first priority byrevising the financial model (Korngold, 18). This will help himdetermine the values that the business will bring. Above all Mikeshould understand the reasons why his business should get involvedwith the volunteering organization and the community at large[CITATION Hab14 l 2057 ].
Importanceof the volunteering organizations
Volunteeringorganization has impacted the lives of many in the county of SanDiego. They have educated children and adults, cured diseases, treated people who are drug addicts, trained and placed people injobs and provided day care for the young children. It has alsoallowed people to enjoy free public parks, concerts and museums. Ithas helped in a great deal to create harmony and unity in thecommunities. They have improved transparency and accountability inthe county in terms of usage of the resources (Korngold, 4).Therefore Mike’s business should aim at engaging with volunteeringorganizations such those that will provide education, medicalfacilities and above all try to help the disadvantaged individuals. As a human resource manager i will recommend Mike’s business toengage with organizations that will help the disadvantagedindividuals by ensuring that they get education, housing facilitiesand medical facilities. This will help to increase the corporateimage of his company in the public and widen his business.
Forexample, the Turners, DPR and Mc Carthy construction companies, haveimpacted the educational level of the majority and improved theirhealthy through constructing, renovating and expanding theirservices. They have also made homes for the people who were oncehomeless. This has created confidence in them and target toaccomplish more. Other people and visitors from outside find it easyto manipulate the history of Sa Diego through the help of thesevolunteering organizations. The Volunteering programs havetransformed the land of San Diego giving the county a new meaning ofcollaboration efforts. Mike’s business should emulate the same.
Turners,DPR and the Mc Carthy construction companies have played a criticalrole in improving the lives of the individuals in San Diegocommunity. They have ensured that San Diego becomes a home ofhumanity. They have embraced volunteering programs and improved thelevel of education in the areas to ensure that individuals lead abetter life. The companies also have constructed hospitals, schools, hotels and much other structured that have redesigned the San DiegoCounty giving it a new look. For example, the Turners ConstructionCompany has established the Turners school of management which offersfree courses to the individual interested. The company offersvoluntary teachers to teach the people and share with them theirknowledge and skills to the community at large. This has helped toequip the people of San Diego with the required skills to supportthemselves and the generations to come. Both companies have gone tothe ground to reach people. They have achieved this throughcollaborating with these communities establishing a good relationshipbetween the communities and the companies. These have created unityand leadership skills whereby the companies practice servantleadership. Those who were once homeless right now, they own a home. This has been made easy through the continued support of thesecompanies in improving the life and well-being of the community inwhich they operate
Inconclusion, San Diego has completely gained a new look. Turners, DPRand the Mc Carthy volunteering construction companies have seen thecounty experience tremendous changes over time. The three companieshave totally changed the face of the San Diego. People have beenresettled once again, and life made comfortable to them. Thecompanies have formed the voluntary organization that helps themreach people in the community. The organizations have helped incollaborating the community at large and the construction companiesthat continued to accomplish very important projects. For example, through the collaboration, the companies have improved the educationlevel of the people through building schools and offering voluntaryteachers to train them[ CITATION Kol15 l 2057 ].A good example is the Turners school of Management which wasconstructed by the Turners construction company to offer free coursesthrough the help of volunteering teachers from the company. Also, thecompanieshave improved the healthy status of the residents throughconstructing hospitals in the area. For example, the DPR Company hasspent over $3.6 billion on projects that are meant to improve thehealth of the people. The projects involve the renovation, construction, and expansion of hospitals. For example, the companyhas used more than $36 million to renovate and expand the St. David’sWomen Center of Texas to increase women services.
Also, the companies have engaged in building houses for the people, creating time so as to share their skills together making San Diego ahabitat for the humanity. This has seen the county of San Diegoprosper and creating opportunities for the less advantaged. Thecollaboration has helped to enhance harmony and strengthens the bondbetween the people of San Diego. Indeed San Diego is a home forhumanity. Therefore, I recommend Mike’s business to engage on thesame activities.
Asthe company continue to enjoy huge benefits it realizes as a resultof its efforts in collaborating with the community, it should keepand safeguard the environment, therefore, stated below are therecommendations that Mike’s company should embrace and implement. They include
1.The company should design appropriate measure to reduce or stopthe increased number of incidents reported that results to injury. For example, it can use the mobile safety audit system as the DPRCompany to evaluate and measure the cases of incidences reported. This will help to target zero incidences making the places safe towork in.
2.The company should be flexible in adopting and copying with thenew technology. It can achieve this through incorporating new skillsand knowledge and intensifying its research to acclimatize with thechanging technology. This will make the activities flow smoothly andcompete favorably with the rest of the country and around the world.
3.Also, the company should know that the community is the largeststakeholders and therefore its activities must start at the locallevel before moving to overseas. This can be achieved through formingcommunity organization that will be working hand in hand to motivateand inspire the community to reach greater heights.
4.The company should be able to manage well the scarce resources inthe environment. This is done through appropriate usage of theavailable resources without wasting any and preserving the rest forthe future generation. Therefore effective control and planningshould be applied.
5.Lastly, the company should conserve the environment through usingthose methods that are environmentally friendly that do not pollutethe soil, air or water, or sound. For example, it can adoptalternative sources of energy such as the use of solar energy unlikeusing firewood or charcoal to produce steam.
