Portalhypertension is considered to be a condition whereby there is a risein the blood pressure within the portal venous system (Rossi, Ricci &Broglia, 2012). The condition has been associated with cirrhosis asbeing the main cause. The purpose of this report is to discuss thecause and effect of the condition, how it is evaluated withultrasound, and the role of sonographers.
Differentcauses have been associated with portal hypertension, which includealcohol abuse, fatty liver, cystic fibrosis, excess iron buildup, anddevelopmental failure of the portal vein among other causes. Effectsof portal hypertension include having abdominal discomfort, bleedingdigestive tract, confusion, and swollen abdomen (Rossi et al., 2012).When bleeding occurs in the digestive tract, emergency treatment isrequired.
Inthe evaluation of portal hypertension, ultrasonography is widelyutilized. Real-time ultrasonography evaluates portal hypertension byshowing liver surface nodularity, right lobe atropy, as well assplenomegaly. Besides, in the evaluation, ultrasound measures thedimension of the primary portal vein and visualizes the portosystemiccollaterals. Doppler plays the role of characterizing and detectingthe complex hemodynamics depicted by portal hypertension in cirrhosis(Rossi et al., 2012). One of the special processes during the processmay include Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosystematic Shunt (TIPS),which a process that utilizes imaging guidance in linking the portalvein to the hepatic vein found in the liver. Thus, in this case, therole of sonographers is to connect portal vein to the hepatic vein inorder to stop bleeding.
Inconclusion, portal hypertension results from a rise in the bloodpressure within the portal venous system. Some causes of thecondition include cirrhosis, excessive drinking, fatty liver, cysticfibrosis, and excess iron buildup. The condition can result inbleeding in the digestive tract.
