Advocacy and Lobbying
AreMADD’s activities advocacy or lobbying or both? If both, whichactivities fit each definition?
Advocacyand lobbying are similar in their intended objective of highlightingimportant issues. However, they differ in their methodology andprocess. According to [ CITATION Wor17 l 1033 ],Advocacycan be defined as the process of arguing for an idea or a cause. Itentails an attempt at causing political action through methods suchas public campaigns or civic education. On the other hand, lobbyinginvolves trying to influence the government or its leaders. From theMADD case study in case # 11.1, it is clear that their activitieswere both advocacy and lobbying. Their lobbying activities includedCandy Lightner’s lobbying of the governor for new legislation andMADD’s state legislature lobbying at the federal level. Theirlobbying resulted in the passing of drinking laws. The group alsocarried out advocacy in the form of bringing together victim’sfamilies, making speeches, raising money, school programs andadvocating for stricter laws [ CITATION Wor17 l 1033 ].
Whichprograms and activities could CASA have undertaken on its own, andwhich required the creation of CASA in Action as a separateorganization?
Thereare some activities that nonprofit organizations can undertake ontheir own without the need of legal requirements and documentation. Most of these activities are volunteer social services and are lesscomplex with affordable budgets. From case # 11.2, it is clear thatCASA could have carried out its initial activities on its own. Theseactivities include offering emergency food, clothing, assistance, counseling, and education. However, other higher magnitude activitiesnecessitated the creation of a more capable and more financed CASA inaction. These are activities that require special legal licensingfrom the government and more funds. They include politicalundertakings such as political advocacy, electoral issues, endorsingpolitical candidates and matters to do with the law.
