Leadership is an essential aspect in many organizational settings andrelated platforms across the globe. Some scholars believe thatleaders are born while others believe that one can only attain theart via learning. There are many leadership styles, which areinclusive of servant leadership. The given style aims to better andsupport other people (those being led) by placing their interest, ambitions, and needs above those of a leader. This form of leadershippositively affects the organizational performance, since it motivatesothers to draw inspirations from the leader[ CITATION Cho132 l 1033 ].There are many servant leaders across the globe. Bill Gates is one ofsuch leaders. In this paper, I will discuss Bill Gates servantleadership traits and if possible, highlight some of the traits thatI can borrow from him to integrate into our organization for improvedperformance.
Bill Gates co-founded Microsoft and seen as one of the mostinfluential entrepreneurs in the computer industry. Despite being, one of the richest figures around, he has portrayed the servantleadership in an admirable manner. Most of the rich people tend to beignorant and feel that they have everything they need, so they treatother people badly, but this is not the case with Gates as he ishumble. He has made many efforts to help those around him, by givingthem access to basic life needs. Some of these needs are inclusive ofaccess to better Medicare, education, necessary information and otherrelated support services. He has offered help to those in need, toimprove their quality of life.
Bill Gates understand that poverty stems from laziness. He knows thatnothing falls from the sky, so one has to work for it. Beforestarting his company, he was hugely involved in programmingactivities. This served as the basis to form his programmingorganization since he had the knowledge required to do so. Hisbiography indicates that most of the programming concepts he hadacquired were not taught at school, so he had to self-teach and dothe necessary practice to gain proficiency in them. This enabled himto come up with the MS-DOS as the base software that propelled hissuccess. A servant leader knows that hard work counts for almosteverything. A leader knows that to achieve the organizational goalsand milestones, they have to input the necessary hard work.
Stewardship is the other trait that Bill Gates portrays. Yes, he wasthe leader of multi-billion dollar company, but instead of remainingthere as the leader, he chose to relinquish his duties to serveothers. He invested in humanitarian and philanthropic works that wereessential in the society. His humanitarian efforts focus on improvingthe quality of life by making the world a better place by resolvingmajor global issues. He collaborates with his wife, Melinda Gates toform the Bill and Melinda Gates organization. This organization hasraised many financial resources to eliminate some of the commonchallenges across the globe. This nonprofit foundation aims to helpother by unlocking their potential and giving them the opportunity toutilize their capabilities.
The major traits that Gate portrays which are inclusive of humility, stewardship and hard work inspire others to do the same. His firmresolve of improving the quality of life and his dedication towardsthe cause is very motivating and inspiring at the same time. Hisleadership principles are something worthwhile that could provide alearning opportunity to leaders who wants to acquire the servantmentality[ CITATION Cho132 l 1033 ]. By adopting these major traitsand mentally from Bill Gates servant leadership style in myworkplace, I will improve the current standings. This would requireand my fellow employees to be accountable for our actions with theknowledge that we affect others and their future depending on how webehave. The self-consciousness will allow us to become better people, consequently improving the performance and necessary output toachieve organizational objectives. With such a positive mindset, wewill eliminate the monotony associated with certain job positions, thus deriving meaningful purpose from our work that will eventuallylead to organizational success.
In conclusion, one can note that in spite of having many leadershipstyles, each has its unique traits that differentiate it from theother. In this context, we considered servant leadership, whichrequires the individual to dedicate himself/ herself to the serviceof others. Additionally, this form of leadership necessitates theneed for one to forget their personal motives and consider those ofothers, in the larger perspective. Bill Gate portrays the perfectdefinition of a servant leader. By emulating traits portrayed by BillGates, one can improve their organizational outlook.
