Argumentative Essay Drinking and Driving Versus Texting and Driving
The act of textingwhile driving is less dangerous compared to drinking and driving. Texting and driving has become prevalent due to the increased numberof teens who drive in the past decade. It has also been contributedby the increased use of the social media such as Facebook as the mainmeans of communication. Driving after consumption of alcohol inone’s vehicle is a common occurrence in old individuals and theteens. For instance, young youth seek to maximize their enjoyment indifferent areas such as driving after drinking and drinking whiledriving. On the other hand, the elderly individuals attend partieswhere they consume and sometimes take alcohol with them on theirjourney back. The essay explores why texting while driving is lessdangerous compared to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Although texting and driving cause approximately 18% of all injuriesand deaths on the American roads, it is incomparable to drinking anddriving (Zhao,Xiaohua, Zhang, and Rong 2). In the year 2016, 32% ofall car crashes occurred due to the effects of intoxicated drivers(Zhao,Xiaohua, Zhang, and Rong 2). Drinking and driving inmost cases cause fatal accidents compared to texting and driving. Forinstance, when one is drunk, it may lead to his/her death, andkilling of other individuals in different vehicles. Texting is anactivity that affects the hands and eyes for a short duration. Inaddition, individuals who send texts while driving tend to becautious of their actions. On the other hand, alcohol influences thedrivers’, feet, eyes, hands and the brain. Driving involves avariety terrain changes requiring one to always be alert in order tomake rapid decisions. Drinking affects one’s essential drivingskills that comprise coordination, comprehension, reaction time, vision, concentration, tracking, and judgment.
Research indicatesthat when one takes alcohol as low as 0.02 percent in concentration,it influences the body in a particular sequence (Zhao,Xiaohua, Zhang, and Rong 5). Initially, alcohol affectsthe brain, which hinders formation reliable judgments while driving.Drinking and driving declines the ability to plan ahead, reasonproperly and make sound decisions drastically.Texting whiledriving rarely affects one’s body in any particular manners (Burge,Rondell, and Chaparro 12). It leads to increasedconcentrations on texting in order to write a message in the shortesttime possible. Texting and driving arise increased suspense and fear.As a result, one`s judgment capability is not left at stake. Moreover, drinking and driving in most instances impairs one’sability to focus on various driving skills. One may end upconcentrating on driving alone, as opposed to all the aspects ofdriving such as traffic on the road, speed, fuel, and position of thevehicle on the road. The short attention span is the key leadingcause of accidents on the roads. When one is drunk and driving, approximation of distances becomes difficult due to relativelyblurred vision. An individual in most cases may fail to understandswhen he/she is approaching another vehicle at high speed orpedestrians. One the hand, texting and driving makes a driver move ata reduced speed. As a result, chances of colliding with othervehicles become minimal.
Texting and drivingrarely affects an individual comprehension by a great extent comparedto drinking and driving (Burge,Rondell, and Chaparro 15). When one takes alcohol, itbecame difficult to understand signals from other drivers and roadsignals. Furthermore, it becomes difficult to determine accuratelythe centerline and the vehicles around. If a driver is on a busyhighway the chances of becoming confused and unable to take safetymeasures increases. When one is texting, it is easy to understandroad signs and signals in the roundabouts.
Despite texting anddriving influencing one`s coordination, its effects tend to last fora short period (Burge,Rondell, and Chaparro 20). In most cases, people textwhile in traffic jams or areas that are less congested. On the otherhand, drivers who are drunk are exposed to gross risks both incongested and in non-congested areas. When drunk, it becomesdifficult for a driver to coordinate the key motor skills. Alcoholaffects one’s nervous system. For instances, the feet and handsmay become shaky, affecting and the individual`s the reaction time. Alcohol impacts on one’s reflexes, decreasing the ability to actduring emergencies. Research indicates that alcohol reduces anindividual’s reaction time by more the 22% (Zhao,Xiaohua, Zhang, and Rong 6). It is easy for one toreorganize when texting compared to when one is drunk, increasing thechances of causing an accident.
In the year 2011,the number of drivers detected while driving under the influence ofalcohol was 1.2 million (Zhao,Xiaohua, Zhang, and Rong 2). In the year 2012, thenumber escalated to approximately 29.1 million people as per the FBIstatistics (Zhao,Xiaohua, Zhang, and Rong 3). The drivers caught textingand driving in America were 341, 000, which is an insignificantnumber compared to individuals caught driving (Burge,Rondell, and Chaparro 22). Alcohol is the most abuseddrug in American, and 3, 952 drivers involved in fatal accidents inthe year 2011 tested positive when scrutinized for alcoholconsumption. Consequently, one is more likely to face an accidentdue to a drunk driver compared to one who is texting. Drunk driversare not only a threat to their lives but the community and property. Most vehicles driven by drunk people are the major causes ofdestruction to the roadside barriers and roads signs. Additionally, fatal accidents the involve children result due to drinking anddriving.
Various factors suchare rules and regulations seem to facilitate drinking and drivingcompared to texting and driving. In America, drinking and drivingare prohibited in all states despite beings widely abused (Zhao,Xiaohua, Zhang, and Rong 3). Regardless of one’s ageor experience, no one is allowed to drink and drive. On the hand, texting and driving is banned in only less than 24 States.Consequently, texting and driving tend to be high across America.Nevertheless, since the number of accidents caused by drunk driverstends to be high, police officers have shifted their attentions toindividuals who consume alcohol. With time, both drinking and textingare likely to be the leading cause of accidents on the roads.Although laws the prohibit drinking and driving tend to be inexistence, they are lenient. For instance, the Ist offense penalty isa jail term of 180 days or a fine that does not exceed $1,000 (Zhao,Xiaohua, Zhang, and Rong 8). Some of the drivers arerich and capable of raising the required fines, which jeopardizes thelives of other drivers and pedestrians. As a result, drinking is adanger to the lives of pedestrians. The problem of drinking anddriving can be partially be blamed on both the federal and the localgovernment. Revising the road safety regulations is important topreserve life and property in the roads. For instances, increasingthe jail penalties and the fines charged is likely to enhance roadssafety. For instances, individuals who kill more than two peoplecould be jailed for their entire lifetime due to the enormous lossthey cause in America. Talents are irreplaceable, and they leave widegaps that take years to solve. Due to roads accidents, great leadersand scientists have perished. Consequently, severe laws andregulations should be implemented to govern the act of drinking anddriving.
According toresearch, behavioral change may take more than six months (Zhao,Xiaohua, Zhang, and Rong 5). People who indulged inbehaviors such as drinking may stay in rehabilitations centers formore than two years. In addition, falling backing to taking ofalcohol after serving a jail term is easy compared to texting. Alcohols is a depressant the affects various parts of the body suchas hands and legs. In addition, it affects key parts of the brainthat aid in judgment, memory, movement and speech. Individuals whoare drunk show impulse behaviors and may engage in a quarrel evenafter causing and accident, causing emotional hurt to the affectedand the individuals nearby. Due improper reasoning, individuals whoare under the influence of alcohol may deny their charges, delayingthe decisions made in courts. Texting while driving is essay to curb. For the instance, parents and teachers can collaborate and educateyoung individuals concerning their safety. The government could alsohold frequents meetings and seminars to educate the public about thedangers of concentrating on texting while one is driving. The socialmedia platforms can also encourage their subscribers to discuss andhighlight the dangers of texting while driving. Consequently, alcohol consumption is the most damaging compared to texting bydrivers, and need concerted efforts from both the government and thepublic.
In conclusion, theact of drinking and driving causes deaths of other innocent driversand pedestrians on the road. Drinking leads to reckless driving, which even damages the road properties such as roadside safetybarriers and road signs. Although texting and driving causepedestrian’s injuries and deaths based on the terrains and theconcentration level of the driver, it cannot be compared to textingand driving. Texting and driving have minimum impact on thepedestrians and property, as in most cases the drivers tend to slowdown while texting. Alcohol affects key parts of the body compared towhen an individual is texting. For instance, alcohol affects one`sbrain functions such as memory, judgment, and nerves control whiletexting affects only concentration of an individual. As a result, thegovernment should focus more on drinking and driving, as it is amenace to the society.
