Argumentative Synthesis Essay
Literatureplays an important role that informs the readers of different issuesthat touch on social, economic or political aspect in the society andthe work by Gaiman and Hari are no exemption. They provide anin-depth review and analysis related to reading culture, thebenefits, and challenges likely to encounter in the process. Gaimansays that reading is important and must be supported and defended byall in equal measure as it is an obligation. He encourages thereading of fiction books that motivates people to read and buildsempathy. Fiction, in particular, helps people to innovate and inventand children should be encouraged to nurture and develop the readingculture for a brighter future. Parents need to let and encouragetheir children to read and not direct them on what to read butencourage and support what their children have chosen. Hence, everystakeholder has an obligation that includes readers, writers andcitizens at large to support the noble course stated by Gaiman. Onthe other hand, Hari says that there is countless destruction aroundus that discourage people from reading as experienced in thecontemporary times due to the technological improvements. Readingbooks brings deep thoughts and deep concentration and is realizedwhen one steps back from the noise. Hari believes that books willsurvive even in the era of e-books. He notes that even in theinternet era, users have to practice a balanced approach to avoidletting it addle them. However, I do agree with both writers butGaiman to a large extent and in particular how reading fiction helpsdevelop and nurture the innovation and invention individuals thatsolve most societal concerns and challenges. Moreover, the obligationthat each stakeholder has in the course to encourage reading. Hence,I say that all concerned should embrace a balanced approach thatsynchronize the contemporary and the old reading needs to create asustainable reading culture.
Thereare factors that contributed to the extensive reading culture in thepast. Since situations change and are dynamic, the present emphasisand steps that encourage reading culture, hence, need to researchfactors that contributed to the success noted in the past. Forexample, Gaiman notes that England is the only country that hashigher literacy and numeracy group from the oldest age group. He says“to put it another way, our children and our grandchildren are lessliterate and less numerate than we are… (6/8).” When researchreveals the factors that led to the development of such culture, itmight give in-depth revelations that when synchronized in thecontemporary times that technology development shapes most of thethings done, including reading, it can result in realizing thedesired goals as stated by Gaiman. We cannot assume the changing anddynamic environment hence, the environment that was present backthen is not the same as experienced today. The generations aredifferent and, hence, through research, more helpful and usefuldiscoveries can be presented to enhance the reading culture in thepresented digital age. It is imperative to note that technologydevelopment has not only shaped reading culture but also otherrelevant factors in life such as transport, communication, andsecurity among many others. Hari also supports technology developmentonly that he encourages correct use and application to eliminatepossible destruction while reading. Hari says “ No, don`tmisunderstand me. I adore the web….This isn’t going to turn intoan Anteduluvianrant against the glories of our wired world (2/3).” It implies that he understands and respects the development that hastranspired related to technology. For example, the challenges thatresult from using a computer such as noise as stated by the authorcan be solved by developing computers that are super first and oflarger capacity that do not make noise destructing the reader.Reading fiction and encouraging it helped the development of manythings as asserted by Gaiman and the same can also lead toinnovations and inventions that eliminate possible challenges thatarise from using technology to enhance reading culture. Allstakeholders hence have an obligation as stated by Gaiman that canensure sustainable approaches to maintain the reading culturepreferred by the old generation as well as invent newer ideas andways to encourage the present generation to embrace reading.
Itis only through research that would shed light on the factors thatencouraged reading culture among the old aged generation. Also, through research that finds factors that discourage the presentgeneration from nurturing reading culture whether fiction ornon-fiction. It would provide the basis that long-term sustainablesolutions and transitions can be made that address the interest ofboth old and young. Rushing to judge either generation would not helpaddress the subject objectively. When Gaiman says “We writers –and especially writers for children, but all writers – have anobligation to our readers: it’s the obligation to write truethings…(7/8)” It is this perception that they have to embraceresearch and, thus, create contents based on evidence from theresearch. It would shed light on the reason the old age generationwere very active and embraced reading culture as well as theperception that younger people have to discourage them from fullyembracing the reading culture of real books.
Inconclusion, the two pieces by Gaiman and Hari presents an importantaspect that encourages reading. It is important to nurture anddevelop the reading culture even in the contemporary times thattechnology has dominated many aspects. Therefore, research has to beembraced to determine the factors that encouraged the old aged toembrace reading as well as what can inspire the current generation toembrace reading culture.
