Artis part of human culture. Today, many museums provide a good platformfor students and the public to learn about different paintings.Recently, I had an opportunity to visit a museum where I sawdifferent pictures. Below are two of the paintings that will beanalyzed in this comfortable.
SaintJerome in His Study
Style:Oil on panel
TheAssumption of the Virgin
Style:Oil and Canvas
VisualAnalysis of the image of Saint Jerome
Inthe composition, there are different lines, which describe SaintJerome in his study room. The composition has a two-dimensional shapewith length and width. The structure is square shaped. The form ofthe structure is three-dimensional with length, width, and volume. There is also a value, which refers to the lightness or darkness ofcolors or tones. The composition has both bright colors mostly in thefront image of the Saint and dark colors in the background. Thesecolors are used in the composition at different levels of brightness.Brown is the majority of the color used in the image. The texture ofthe picture is smooth from the lines and colors used (Glatstein 34).
Thereis symmetry in the composition as the image of the saint in the studyroom is placed at the center. The piece is representational and givesa perfect picture of the study room of Saint Jerome. It includesimages of a human being, Saint Jerome, an animal that is a lion andidentifiable objects such as the study table, books and a sculptureof someone on the cross. The art is a narrative about Saint Jerome. The sculpture of someone crucified also show that the Saint was afollower of a certain religion that identified with the symbol. Theimage of the lion signifies the love of Saint for animals and natureat large.
Theimage of the Saint in the study room is natural as well as thesetting of the shelves and books. The sculpture of the crucifiedperson is also natural in the composition and is found in many placessuch as offices and homes where the dwellers are believers. The imageof a lion sitting on the table is abstract though. There are bothwarm and cold colors in the composition. The light brown color usedon the table, as well as the light color on the image of Saint Jeromeare warm colors.
Visualanalysis of the image of the assumption of the virgin
Linesare used in the image of the assumption of the virgin to give theimages in the composition. The shape in the image is oval, and theform is three-dimensional. There is also value with differentbrightness and darkness in the image. The skies in the image arebrighter than the ground. The color is also used in the image. Theblue color is used for the sky. There is also symmetry in the imagewith the virgin at the center of the image and other followers onboth sides equally distributed. The image has balance and can bedivided into two halves.
Theimage has identifiable objects. A person is holding a Biblesignifying the place of assumption to be a worship place. There arealso images of angels from heaven accompanying the virgin to heaven. There are also images of young children at the feet of the virgin.Children are a gift from God according to the religion, and thisshows the teachings of the virgin while here on earth. The art is anarrative showing how the virgin ascended to heaven leaving behindthe disciples as explained in the scriptures.
Theartist has used both warm and cool colors in the composition. Red isused in the dressing of the disciples that is a warm color while blueis used for the sky and is a cool color. White has also been used toincrease brightness in the image of the assumption of the virgin.
Iliked “SaintJerome in His Study”image as it realistically portrays the saint in the study room usingreal objects in the composition. The image also has a balance ofvalue and is symmetrical. The composition appealed to with theinclusion of animals in the image. It greatly emphasized the need forhumans to live at peace with nature and enjoy its values. The artalso showed that since time immemorial, reading has been a culture ofmany people. The image also appealed to me with its setting of anormal study room. The cool colors give the ambience of a studyroom.
Idid not like “TheAssumption of the Virgin”as it is not natural. The assumption of the virgin is supernaturaland beyond human understanding and abilities. It is a matter ofbelief and different people subscribe to different ideologies. Theimage has no natural aspects in it. The assumption of the virgin ismore of an imagination with few earthly things in the image. The warmcolors in the art are also not so appealing. A little shade from coolcolors on the ground was needed. The art is also highly concentratedand the shape is not appealing. The art did not appeal to me due tomy religious orientation.
