ARTH 112 Survey of Art II
ARTH112: Survey of Art II
Theselected painting is number six on the list and falls into thecategory of realism type of art style. The categorization is based onthe image quality as it shows an almost perfect illustration of whatthe objects would seem in real life. The picture appears to be acontemporary piece of art since it depicts a comparison between amodern society and a vintage society. It compares two men fromdifferent times in history. The first man on the left appears to befrom the modern century while the second man on the right seems to beliving in the nineteenth-century. Therefore, this piece of art triesto inform the audience on how civilization has metamorphosed sincethe nineteenth-century to the current age using different materialsand colors to depict different eras of society.
Thepainter has used colors and a style that shows different historicaltimes. The man on the left has tattoo markings on his right forehand.Tattoos have become more popular in the current century as they showa degree of stylishness and the personality of the individual.Similarly, the mode of dressing of this man and the hair style arefurther evidence that he comes from the current century. Thisdressing style of the man on the left represents a typical Americanyouth of color. On the other hand, the man on the right is a typicalcowboy as evidenced by his cowboy attire. The painter has used coolcolors to show an outmoded historical period with a horse behind him. This piece of art shows the philosophical principle of time thatregards all points of time as real except the future (Stanley 35).
Inthe image, the artist has used different elements of art to paint thetwo men. Lines aid in expressing motion, energy, and motion in apicture. Both paintings have employed thin, visible lines to showmotion. On the other hand, color has been used differently on the twomen focused on the art. In the man on the left, the painter usedgreen and red complementary colors to paint the flowers and create acontrast between them. Similarly, the artist used warm colors on theimage with the man on the left to show natural light. Consequently, the image looks active, stimulates the viewer, and creates a feelingof a present era. Conversely, the second image on the right hasemployed cool colors that create a sense of relaxation and aperception of an overcast day. Thus, the image looks old. Both imagesfocus on the middle ground that has two men with walking sticks intheir hands. The entire painting has a visual texture which makes thesurface of the piece remain smooth. Likewise, the whole paintingutilizes an asymmetrical compositional balance of objects. As aresult, the image appears simplistic in nature. There is a differencein the two men focused on the painting. The left image is a 2-D imagewith only length and width while the image at the right is 3-D innature with length, width, and depth.
Inconclusion, this painting reflects the philosophy of time and howchanges have taken place since the advent of civilization. The art isdivided into two parts with different scenarios illustratingdifferent eras of history. The left side of the image shows acontemporary era while the image on the right side shows a typicalnineteenth-century scene. The artist has employed color, lines, compositional balance, and texture to present the ideology.
