Jimmyhad to repeat a three-year-old class without his wish because hisparents thought that Jimmy was still immature. Also, his parentsassumed that he was socially okay which was contrary to theappropriate diagnosis done afterward this had a great impact on hisdevelopment. Furthermore, his parents took Jimmy to be a littleimmature and presumed that they had no worry to have him wait beforehe could join the school. He was taken on regular check-ups andx-rays on his early life, and this also didn’t bear any fruits asthe real condition was yet to be discovered.
Autismspectrum disorders have major characteristics related to behavioral,communication and social interaction. Regarding communication, wefind Jimmy facing difficulties initiating and sustaining conversationwhereby we see Jimmy difficulties in forming and maintainingfriendships. Under Behavioral this includes sensory sensitivitieswhich comprise of avoidance of every day like the way Jimmy getsannoyed by noises, his mother and siblings seem to bother him withloud conversations. Jimmy often puts fingers in his ears at theslightest sound elevation.
Adevelopmental disability may be a very severe, chronic incapacity ofsomeone that`s due to a mental or physical impairment. Developmentaldisability is manifested in Jimmy. When it comes to Self-care, Jimmycouldn’t take care of his basic needs, like telling his mother tostop talking when noise bothered him. Also, Jimmy had difficulty incoordinating his Language when communicating with others. Also,during pre- school Jimmy’s teacher notices him be abnormal when inclass he had difficulty Learning, ability to learn new things was anissue to Jimmy. Furthermore, Jimmy had sensory problems which aredevelopmental where we see him being affected by sound elevation ornoise. Nevertheless, Jimmy could not initiate any friendship orsustain it. It is evident from the book that at the age of five,Jimmy had failed to make friends.
Flingfamily first took Jimmy to the pediatrician who recommended Jimmy tobe treated with possible ASD, perceptually impaired and psychologicalissues. It resulted in four-year therapy for Jimmy. Jimmy had anappointment with the doctor where his ears were tested, and it cameout he had no ears related problems this was because Jimmy used toput his fingers in the ears whenever there was noise. The thirdappointment was at Deanie, a social skills therapist. The socialskills therapy was to help Jimmy make new friends and interact wellwith his peers. The other intervention was the use of movies tocapture Jimmy’s attention this was to help him understand thelanguage and communicate effectively. All this treatments andinterventions seemed to help Jimmy because at last, we can seecertain changes in Jimmy’s behavior and social life.
InDSM-V researchers suggested that we may have fewer people will beindividuals with no repetitive and restricted behaviors yet theywould have been diagnosed with ASD. It shows that Jimmy will stillqualify for a diagnosis of ASD under the current criteria justbecause the current criteria includes the Persistent deficits insocial communication and social interaction across multiple contexts,including making new friends or sustaining the existing friends whoare still evident in Jimmy. Poole (2016) shows that deficits in thereciprocity which range from failure of the normal conversation andsocial-normal behavior like social behavior are similar to that ofJimmy which reduces sharing of interests and emotions when around thefamily.
Thespecific family issue that might have particular relevance for theassessment and treatment of Jimmy ASD is the fact that his mother isclosely monitoring Jimmy performance and improvement on both socialand behavior changes. His mother playing a significant role inensuring that Jimmy recovers from ASD will stir a relationship thatis good for Jimmy and his parents. The interaction between Jimmy andher siblings will help Jimmy in developing social traits of makingnew friends and making Jimmy enjoy their company.
