Forindividuals to understand each other, they have to communicate.Communication is a vital component in nursing. According to Currie &White (2012), nursing is a healthcare field where nurses focus oncatering to human needs in a professional manner. A nurse wasattending to a patient. However, the nurse and the patient were notable to communicate well because the patient did not speak English.The patient was also in a lot of pain, anxious and also veryuncomfortable. On the other hand, the nurse was a little bitexhausted given that she had been attending to other patients all daylong. The nurse was in a hurry and did not take time to listen towhat the patient had to say.
Communicationis the exchange of thought, information, and feelings. However, aspeople communicate some barriers hinder effective communication,especially the communication between nurses and their patients. Forinstance difference in the language spoken by the patient and thenurse, patient`s anxiety, patient’s pain, the environment of theward and physical discomfort are some of the various factors that actas barriers to effective communication.
Inconclusion, for a nurse to be able to communicate effectively to thepatient, there is need to understand that the practice requires notonly scientific skills but also technical and intellectual skills,the most crucial one being communication. Listening is an essentialelement in communication. Therefore, nurses should pay attention andmobilize all their senses to understand their patients. Nurses shouldalso be polite when asking questions and providing information to thepatients. Additionally, nurses should be patient while communicatingwith their patients. Some of the patients may be in pain which cansignificantly slow their ability to communicate effectively. Usingthese strategies during communication with their patients will makethem feel comfortable and also quicken the healing process.
