ChallengesImpeding Implementation of the Selected Plan
Thesix sigma approach will be implemented through several steps thatwill involve gathering data, identifying gaps within the hospitalarea that need to be addressed and proposing an action plan that willinvolve application of PDSA cycle. The action plan will involvepatients, physician, nurses, departmental leaders and other supportstaff within the organization. The plan will target selected patientsfrom the elderly groups who have been known to have a prolongedlength of stay in health institutions. Data gathering will involvedetermining the key areas that experience delays that consequentlyled to delayed discharge of patients. Penner (2013) suggests thatdetermining costs in each are and determining ways that can be usedto reduce the costs both to the healthcare system and the patient.
Gapsidentification will involve benchmarking all the processes that thepatient goes through before discharge. Each session that the patientis taken through is determined with clear recording of time takenfrom entering the stage to moving to the next stage. Points of delaywill be identified and time calculated to understand the amount oftime that is lost at each stge. Further, the data will focus on theconnection between different departments in the hospital and howefficiency in communication can be improved.
Proposedaction plan for the six sigma approach will involve use of the PDSAcycle within the hospital system as way of improving communicationbetween departments and thus streamline communication betweenhospital departments and at the same time increase efficiency withinthe system.
