Chapter 8 Questions Question 1
Iwas in a group discussion that lacked structure. The lack ofstructure in the group made me feel confused since the discussion wasdisorganized. The leader provided structure through informing thegroup members the goals of the group and letting the members know howthey could contribute to the group.
Inorder for a leader to have a significant impact on establishing groupnorms, it is important for the leader to provide to the members whatis allowed and what is restricted in the group (Northouse, 2014).Besides, the leader is supposed to shape norms that maximize groupeffectiveness.
Normsare sometimes difficult to change because they may constitutepractices of the larger culture. For instance, if someone is used towearing a hijab as part of the Muslim culture, it will be difficultto make the person change from the practice.
Infinding out the unique ways that each member can contribute to thegroup, a leader can provide members with an opportunity to make theircontributions on a certain issue that the group desires to engage in(Northouse, 2014).
Leaderscan help groups become more cohesive by encouraging passive membersto participate in group affairs, developing a climate of trust, inviting members to become active participants, and listening andaccepting members for who they are.
Ina group, I would require results to be positive and would reviewresults by comparing how improved each member has become, and I wouldvalue rewards that are positive to the groups, where each memberbecomes rewarded.
Themain advantage of the non-confrontational feedback approach is thatit offers an interrogator with an opportunity to realize success, which allows building of rapport by an individual. An example of anon-confrontational feedback that I have personally is where, in casea friend made a comment that would bother me, I never said anything.
Groupprojects in educational settings are usually challenging because mostof them are not structured. I would recommend to instructors to beproviding a structure for the groups in order to streamline things.
Fora new leader to learn about the norms and values in an organization,he should make sure he goes through the rules that guide theorganization and then physically become involved with theorganization to see if the norms are actualized.
