Christianity and Environment
Theresources of the Earth are being destroyed by a combination of somehuman activities and various natural occurrences (Steffen,Richardson, Rockström, Cornell, Fetzer, Bennett & Folke, 2015).It is important for any individual, regardless of their race, socialstatus or religious background, to view the slow and steadydegradation of the earth`s resources as an issue that needs to beurgently addressed. As a result of industrialization, the generationof harmful waste products, demand for natural forms of energy andfossil fuels has increased at an exponential rate. Some critics haveargued that Christianity is not concerned with the conservation ofthe environment. More so, there are individuals who associate theecological ‘crisis` with the Christian practices (Clements,McCright, & Xiao, 2014). However, these statements contradictwith information from the bible. According to the Bible, it is theresponsibility of the humans to take care of the earth and itsresources. The fact is clear from Genesis 2:15 which states that Godtook Adam and placed him in the Garden of Eden to take care of it. Inthe past, most people did not consider the issue of preservation andrestoration of the earth as the duty of the religion. However, thenew thoughts of the link between Christianity and the environmenthave led to raising of concerns on how the Christians can preventpollution and restore the environment. This article will addressissues regarding specific things that Christians should do to help inpreserving and restoring the environment.
Industrializationhas led to growth in the demand for energy (Twidell & Weir,2015). Consequently, more forest depletion cases and emission ofgreenhouse gasses have taken place and as a result, degradation ofthe environment is taking place at a high rate. The most commonnatural occurrences that lead to pollution include volcanic eruptionsthat result in the emission of dust and harmful gasses into theearth`s atmosphere. Currently, the earth is the only planet that isbelieved to support life. Consequently, its destruction poses athreat to the human race. The Christian community should strive toconserve the environment because the teachings of the Bible arebased on good morals and ethics. Therefore environmental conservationand restoration is part of the Christian teachings. In addition, thereligion has the highest number of members in the world. Therefore, any of its activities is likely to be the most influential since themessage can reach many people all over the world.
Christiansshould form organizations whose primary objectives is preservationand restoration of the environment. It is more efficient to implementany strategy as a group than as an individual and therefore, thegroups are more likely to have significant influence than individualefforts. Through the organizations, the Christians will be able toconvince governments and relevant authorities to implement laws thatcontrol firms` activities that lead to pollution. In addition, thegroups can invite various legislators to attend conferences wherematters involving the importance of environmental conservation arediscussed. The organizations may also provide professional advice onhow places such as forests and swamplands that serve as watercatchment areas can be protected from depletion. Some species, especially those that are endangered, would risk becoming extinct.
Somemembers of the Christian community do not have sufficient informationregarding environmental degradation and restoration. It is,therefore, the duty of church administrations to come up withprograms aimed at teaching the congregations about ways through whichthe environment is polluted, how to preserve and restore it. Theseteachings will be more useful in making the members understand theseriousness of the issue and thus take action to prevent thedepletion. It will not be difficult for the church to offer theteachings since the bible`s contents are closely related toenvironment protection. Knowing that God, through the Bible requiresthat man protects the environment will make the Christians addressthe issue with more seriousness.
Althoughthe Christian community has the highest number of members, it isimportant that the church also tries to pass information regardingenvironmental preservation to other communities through the gospelthey preach. As they strive to convert people from other religiouscommunities to Christianity, they should also put in place measuresto effectively convince the people that protecting and restoring theenvironment is important. The church can do these through a number ofways such as organising crusades. Through such, members of everyreligion would be educated on the negative impacts of environmentaldegradation. Campaigns in various academic institutions would alsoserve as a practical approach to spreading the word. Students will betrained on the importance of avoiding practices such as irresponsibledumping of waste materials.
Toserve as good examples, Christians who have gained knowledgeregarding preservation and restoration of the environment should makechanges regarding their way of living. They should help minimize airpollution by checking on the vehicles they use. Improvement intechnology has led to the availability of vehicles that areenvironmental friendly (Kwon, Oh, & Choi, 2014). The Christiansshould, therefore, try to purchase the latter as a way of reducingthe emissions. In addition, the Christians ought to recycle wasteproducts that would be harmful if released into the environment. Theyshould avoid buying products from companies that are known to carryout activities that lead to environmental degradation. For example, some paper making companies are known for cutting down trees withoutplanting newer ones (Keeley & Scoones, (2014). The action willmake the firms realize the seriousness of the matter and put in placeappropriate measures.
Inconclusion, the preservation and restoration of the environment arethe responsibility of every person. Although some pollution occursdue to natural occurrences, most environmental degradation anddepletion are caused by human activities. Due to the high number offollowers, Christians should be at the forefront in preserving andrestoring the environment. They should work together in groups, change their lifestyle, create awareness on the issue regardingpollution and strive to convince the government to implement lawsthat would help reduce the same.
Membersof the Christian religion have the resources and ability to preventdegradation of the environment and come up with ways through whichthe conservation measures can be put in place.
Environmental degradation is primarily attributed to the growing demand of energy and industrialisation.
Christians will more effectively address the issues regarding environmental degradation as a community
Christian leaders should create awareness on the environmental degradation and why preventing it is important.
The community should strive to influence members from other religious communities to avoid degrading the environment and try to put up restoration measures.
To prevent further degradation, every member of the community should try to change their lifestyle.
