TheImportance of Stress as Current Issue

Thetension or pressure, either emotional, mental, or physical, exertedon individuals due to very demanding or adverse circumstances isreferred to as stress. We have all experienced stress in our lives,and, although it is a part of our fundamental survival system, mostof us have come to think that stress is bad for us (Dhabhar 1). It isno secret that excess stress isn’t healthy (Watts 4). The mentaland emotional strain that stress exerts on peoples’ lives mightnegatively affect their behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and bodies,and may contribute to many health complications such as diabetes,heart disease, obesity, and high blood pressure among many others.However, stress isn’t all that bad. It is also important as it cansometimes be a positive force that motivates people to perform well.

Despitemany scholars identifying stress as a negative aspect, one canidentify many of its benefits in human lives and across manyworkplace environments at large. Considering that in many workplacesemployees work under pressure, it is easy for them to developstress.In most scenarios, stress is an indication of an underlyingproblem. It, therefore, means that if one notices the employees orany the person showing signs of being stressed, he/she must beundergoing through a tough or challenging situation, which might bebeyond their handling capacity. Stress would, therefore, be a goodtool to indicate the existence of a problem or change that needs tobe addressed. If relevant stakeholders were to be more, keen, on whatto look out for in their workplaces, it would become much easier tohandle stressed employees and if possible mitigate the problem fromescalating. An escalated stress situation is not what manystakeholders would want in the workplace since it affects theemployee performance thus having a negative bearing in the finaloutput.

Stressalso works out to help individuals identify their strengths orweakness. When under stress most individuals will just act withoutforethinking, which might worsen the current situation. However,other individuals are mentally strong will use the trait to identifythe cause of stress and come up with creative ways of dealing withthe stressor. This would mean that individuals get a chance to growmentally and even one on how they handle stressing situations.

Stressis important as it can help you to meet your goal as well as motivateyou to accomplish your daily challenges. Even though most people feelthat high doses of stress are potentially dangerous to their health,the simple truth is that most of them also feel that stress is, tosome extent, also beneficial. Abramowitz (63) stated that high levelsof stress are crucial since they help keep people motivated toachieve high levels of work both at work and in school. Think aboutyour piano recital, your assignments, or any deadlines that you haveto meet. Such situations stare you in the face, and due to the fearof failure, most people will put pressure on themselves hencestimulating behaviors that enable them to rapidly, effectively, andproductively manage such situations thus fostering goal attainment.Therefore, rather than viewing stress as an unpassable andoverwhelming roadblock, people should view stressful situations aschallenges that they can meet.

Stressis also important as it can boost your brainpower, galvanize you, andhelp you stay engaged and alert in what is going on around you (Bor4). Stress boosts the brain power by stimulating the release of brainchemicals such as neurotrophins which help strengthen the connectionsbetween neurons in the brain thereby facilitating increasedconcentration and productivity. In addition, stress can help fortifythe immune system and make people more resilient. A normal bodyresponse to stress is to prepare the body for the possibility ofinfections or injuries by stimulating the immune system to boost itsdefenses. Also, stress fosters resilience since, by undergoingstress, people learn to deal with it making it easier to managesimilar situations in future. Besides, stress also functions as anessential warning system that activates the fight-or-flight responsewhich further allows individuals to effectively deal with stressfulsituations.

Thenumerous activities that people undertake on a daily basis exertsvarying amounts of stress on their bodies. Most people associate alllevels of stress with detrimental effects on health and wellbeing.However, this is not always the case since only chronic stress isbad. Chronic stress occurs when people feel that they are no longerin control of the situation. However, when managed effectively,stress can actually be good for individuals as it inspires them toattain their goals and objectives, strengthen their immunity, makethem resilient, and nourishes their health. “Although I have beentelling people that stress is bad for them, a recent study made mechange my mind and now I believe that stress can be good for peopleif they actually change how they think about stress.” (McGonigal,TED Talk). Therefore, stress is important. People should embracestress and ensure that they harness its numerous benefits by managingit effectively to prevent the onset of chronic stress which is bad.

Inconclusion, it is notable that despite the many negative aspectsassociated with stress, there are some positives to be taken fromstressing situations. Pushing individuals to achieve personal goals,mental growth, highlighting a source of a problem, identification ofstrengths/weaknesses acts as a source of motivation and boostingbrainpower are some of the main benefits of stress. Managing stressis the key to success in challenging situations.
