at Shoprite was not always formal. In some instances, informal communication was used to transmit urgent messages. Peoplewho were involved in the same task would often send texts to oneanother. Informal styles of communication were mostly used to obtaincritical information from the receivers. On the other hand, formalcommunication was used when conveying policy decisions. In thispaper, I will argue that an assertive style of communication is themost effective since it dignifies both the sender and the receiver.
Notably, various types of communication were used at Shoprite. Forinstance, written communication was used to create memos and otherimportant notices. Hence, the employees received proper directionsregarding various policy actions. Oral communication was also usedduring board meetings to discuss strategy. Managers and departmentalheads held meetings to instruct and encourage their staff members.Interpersonal communication typically occurred when two people wereengaged in private conversations. Departmental heads at Shopritewould have one-on-one discussions with individual workers to addressexisting challenges. Moreover, nonverbal communication was quitecommon when people wanted to communicate in a quiet room. Workers atShoprite would gesture at each other when responding to certainquestions. Managers would also nod when trying to show theirapproval. Clapping during meetings showed that the participants werein agreement with the matters discussed. In many instances, making athumbs-up sign was interpreted as a sign of solidarity.
At Shoprite, verbal communication was more prevalent that non-verbalcommunication. Employees were more likely to hold private discussionsthan use gestures. Managers were required to provide specificinstruction for their workers. Employees also request for leave ofabsence during one-on-one conversations. However, verbalcommunication was more negative than non-verbal communication. Thelatter communication was mostly undertaken through gestures and otherbodily movements. Employees at Shoprite often used thumbs-up signsand nods to show approval. On the other hand, verbal communicationcould be used to rebuke others. Managers often scolded some workersfor failing to fulfill their obligations. Employees at Shoprite alsohad occasional disagreements due to differences in opinion.
My most effective style of communication is assertive due to severalreasons. Firstly, it allows me to clearly express my thoughtsregarding a particular matter. Secondly, the assertive style helpsthe receiver to feel valued. Individuals can determine what they wantwithout seeming insensitive or self-assuming. Furthermore, theassertive style helps a person to maintain amicable relationships andavoid unnecessary conflicts. The other party neither feelsmanipulated nor disrespected. The assertive style is emotionally andsocially expressive since it accepts the likelihood of rejection. Therecipient was able to cope with criticism since it was delivered in akind manner.
Indeed, the assertive style is the best communication method since itaccords proper respect for both the sender and the receiver.Nevertheless, there are several areas that could be improvedregarding my communication styles. For instance, I could learn tomanifest greater eye contact with other people. Non-verbal cues ofcommunication are quite critical during conversations with otherpersons. Maintaining eye contact for extended periods can showinterest in the other person. In addition, I should use more gesturesduring conversations. Natural body movements often have greaterimpact with members of the audience. Gestures also reveal a person’sgreatest interests or concerns. Therefore, adopting gestures andmaintaining eye contact can ensure proper conversations with otherpeople.
