TheUse of Robocalls by Politicians
The rapid technological advancement has changed how aspiringcandidates conduct their campaigns. Politicians have been able toreach out to the public through the use of robocalls. During theelection season, citizens receive many robocalls to the extent ofhating them since at times they act as a bother. The politicalautomated messages have raised mixed reactions from the individuals.Postrel argues that politicians should be charged for the calls whileother individuals believe that the legislation behind the practiceshould be revised (304). However, due to the high rate of successobtained from utilizing the robocall strategy, the technique cannotbe restrained. The paper seeks to advise a political candidate on theuse of robocalls and provide proposals on how to efficiently utilizethe technology.
As a campaign manager, I would encourage the political candidate togo ahead with the utilization of robocalls because of itssignificance. For instance, using the technology is essential as itshall remind the supporters to vote for him/her. The politicalcandidate can also deliver accurate information to the public orclear the air such as when the opponents start spreading rumors as acompetition tactic. Another important thing I would say to thepolitician is the need to embrace the robocalls as a campaignresource. During the election period, an aspiring candidate shouldremain in contact with the citizens and his/her endorsers at alltimes (Green & Gerber 73). Robocalls allow them to communicatequickly and ensures that the target audience gets the message.
The use of robocalls as a campaign strategy can only be effective ifthe politician remains unique and sells his policies well. As acampaign manager, I would recommend my candidate to use automatedcalls such as Push-to-Forward robocalls. It gives the public theoption of speaking directly to the aspiring candidate by pressing thegiven button where they have a live conversation (Green & Gerber83). I believe the direct interaction is an efficient campaignstrategy since the politician can use the feedback from the voters toincrease his chances of winning. Another proposal would be to ensurethat all political robocalls adhere to the legal and disclosurerequirements. For instance, the team should send the automatedmessages to the landlines, instead of mobile phones, and only tothose numbers that are not listed under the Do Not Call Registry(Postrel 303). Additionally, the time of sending the robocalls shouldbe defined. Waking a person late at night to listen to the voicemessage would be absurd. It has led some of the voters to installapplications on their phones that block robocalls (Rash 1). Hence, all tactics applied, involving robocalls, should be used to theextreme advantage of the aspiring candidate.
In conclusion, during the election season, politicians are likely toembrace various alternatives that allow them to solicit for supportfrom the voters. As a campaign manager, it is significant to ensurethat the candidate understands the benefits of the availabletechnologies such as robocalls. Besides, the recommendations made tothe politician should not just focus on his/her win, but alsoconsider the voters. Some of these technologies tend to have theirchallenges, and they could adversely affect a politician’s campaigndrive if the concentration is put on reaching a significant number ofvoters.
