BriefSummary of the Research (Introduction)
Inthis research, the author sought to find out the impact of silverdiamine fluoride and potassium iodide treatment prevention ofsecondary caries. The study also found out the effect the two had ontooth discolouration in glass ionomer cement restoration (Zhao, Mei,Burrow, Lo & Chu, 2017). While doing the study, differentcervical GIC restorations were carried out on 30 premolars. Therestorations were divided into three groups namely group 1, 2 and 3.Group 1 comprised of SDF and KI, group 2 was SDF meant for positivecontrol and in group 3, no treatment as it was for the negativecontrol (Zhao et al., 2017).
Uponcarrying out the cariogenic biofilm challenge, the researchersevaluates for demineralization of dentine adjacent to restoration.The evaluation process applied the micro-computed tomography(micro-CT) and Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy (Zhaoet al., 2017). At different intervals, the study applying the CIELABsystem checked on the color of dentine next to restoration. The datacollected was on the total color change. The result was that therewas noticeable variations in amide I-to-hydrogen phosphate ratio inthe three different groups. Zhao et al., (2017) also established thatthe combination of SDF and KI treatment led to a reduction in theformation of secondary caries though it was never efficient as usingSDF treatment alone. Additionally, traceable stains on therestoration margin was shown, even though the effect was seen asminimal in comparison to use of SDF alone.
Purposeof the Research
Inthis article, the author seeks to establish the effect that silverdiamine fluoride and potassium iodide treatment have on secondarycaries prevention and tooth discolouration while doing the cervicalglass ionomer cement restoration (Zhaoet al., 2017).
Methodsand Materials used in the Research
Themethod or the procedure involved in the survey included specimencollection and selection of materials. The next step entailedcariogenic biofilm challenge, assessment of color, outer lesion depthassessment, and structural evaluation of dentine. In analyzing theorganic structure variations, the study applied FTIR spectroscopy wasapplied (Zhaoet al., 2017).
Duringthe study, different materials and specimens were used in the study.First is the use of teeth (premolars). The other materials included0.1% thymol solution, tungsten carbide bur, water, 10% polyacrylicacid, SDF solution, sterile instruments and gloves, 70% alcohol,Cariogenic bacteria, blood agar plates, 5% sucrose (Zhao et al.,2017).
Resultof the Research
Thecolor change was found to be visible and met the minimumeye-visibility level of 3.7 units.
Inthe article, the researcher concludes that SDF+KI treatment subduedthe development of secondary caries on GIC restorations (Zhaoet al., 2017).Nonetheless, the effect of SDF+KI was not realized as it were for thecase of SDF alone. Upon combining SDF and KI, there was a noticeablestain at the restoration margin (Zhaoet al., 2017).Interestingly, the effect was minimal as compared to pure SDFtreatment.
Currency,Accuracy, Validity and Reliability of the Research
Theresearch was current. The researcher used most current materials forreferences. The accuracy, validity, and reliability of the researchcan at least be affirmed. First, data that was used in the researchwas confirmed to be accurate, valid and reliable using differenttests. A case in point is the Shapiro-Wilk test. Also, the analysisinvolved the repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Also,the one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post hoc test was used to establishthe time variations (Zhao et al., 2017). The research also employedthe use of one-sample t-test for every other group at different timepoints. This helped to establish if color variation was significantand different from the known standard of 3.7. Applying the differentstatistical methods affirmed the seriousness of the researcher as faras the aspect of accuracy, reliability, and validity of the researchis concerned (Zhao et al., 2017). The specimen used were alsoapproved by various institutional bodies.
