Discussionon Organizations’ Culture
A culture is created and exists in people’s mind. Shared values andcustoms, controls the interaction of people in an organization. Theycontrol how workers relate with other stakeholders such as suppliersand customers. The paper will discuss the key elements of anorganization’s culture basing our argument on the book“Organization’s behavior.”
Keyelements illustrating an Organizations Culture
First element is physical artifacts. Each organization is unique interms of the layout and distribution of various utilities. Thearrangements indicate the symbolic expression of the values andnorms, common in members of that organization. Language and metaphorsis another element. Each organization develops its universalcommunication that is common for that particular group of people. Anorganization can develop their own phrases and jargons that are onlycomprehensible by their members only (McShaneand Von Glinow, 2016). The third element is myths, stories and legends. These are unwritten morals that are sharedwithin the organization. Their themes and plot do not change exceptthe characters. They indicate the complexity and movement ofactivities within the firm.
Other elements include ceremonies and celebrations. They are thebehavioral artifacts that strengthen the cultural values and beliefsof an organization. Example is Founder’s Day that helps to rememberthe original values of a firm. Without the ceremonies, the culturewill vanish. Another element is the behavioral norms. The normsdefine how members interact and relate with one another. They dictatewhat is right or wrong, which in other words are the morals of theorganization. Employees’ behavior is primary in developing theorganizational culture. Shared beliefs and values is another element. They are considered as the moral codes. They are the mental picturesabout an organization.
StrengtheningOrganization’s Culture
Leaders should be at the front line in strengthening the organizationcultures. The leader should have a list of current beliefs and valuesof the organization. After having the list, the leader shouldevaluate them and identify the positive and negative elements. Thepositive elements should be reinforced while the negative elementsshould be reformed (McShaneand Von Glinow, 2016). Negative elements lead to poor performance of an organization.
Leaders should develop strategies that nurture the culture of theorganization. The leader should have the elements of an ideal culturethat should be adopted. He/she should develop ways of communicatingthe changes. They should also develop strategies of motivating peopleto embrace the new culture.
In conclusion, cultural aspects are essential in every organization. They represent the moral codes that link people in an organization. In addition, cultural aspects preserve the history of an organizationand its community. Hence, they should be preserved and respected.
