Environment and Growth
ENVIRONMENT AND GROWTH 3
Beforeviewing the lecture by Johan Rockstrom, my outlook for humanity waspositive at least in the foreseeable future. Never had I imaginedthat the need for a paradigm shift in people’s mindset would havecome during my lifetime. After viewing the lecture, I haveexperienced a mindset shift that I now find possible for anyone afterwatching the video.
JohanRockstrom’s skills in encouraging the need for environmentalprotection are overly convincing. If more people get to watch hislecture, many of them are bound to take up an active role in ensuringa sustainable environment. Getting people to let go off resourcesalready in their use is hard (Rockstrom, 2010). However, Rockstrom’sdepiction of the nature of transformation that the earth hasundergone due to human activities helps bring people to the realityregarding the effects of climate change. He says that soon people maybe forced to acknowledge the need to do more in protecting thenatural resources given the negative outcome of some of theiractivities.
Thebiggest challenge to the implementation of policies that lead towardsa sustainable planet earth will be the fight among nations foreconomic power. Another issue will be lobbying by businesspeople keenon fulfilling their selfish interests at the expense of the rest ofhumankind. Despite a strong interest by a majority of the people inthe implementation of suitable solutions to the problem, there isbound to be pressure from those in the positions of power to pushtheir agenda.
Clearly, the lecture has changed my perception towards natural resourcemanagement for the better. Getting people to stop further destructionof the environment is possible. However, economic supremacy andbusiness interests are bound to limit meaningful progress. Increasingawareness among people will help in promoting a shift in theirmindset.
