Epicurus’ Famous Proclamation

Epicurus’argued that people should struggle to live a fulfilled or happy life.Elimination of fear and pain creates happiness. Epicurus claim thatindividuals do not have to afford expensive foods or things to live, but they require items that fulfill them. He believed that dependingon expensive things causes pain, which transforms to unhappiness.According to Epicurus, happiness is crucial and can be accessedeasily by having freedom, supportive friends, and an analyzed life. The paper supports the Epicurus` argument on a good life.

I agree with Epicurus because the life that people live is dependenton the freedom they have, their friends, and an analyzed life.Happiness is an important aspect of life and can be attained throughsimple pleasures that influence an individual’s peace of mind andhealth. Epicurus belief that the satisfaction of specific desires andwants helps to eliminate pain is applicable. I support his claim thatpeople need to identify the basic needs and minimize their desires tobe able to have a happy and good life. Artificial needs such aswealth and fame make people strain and experience pain as they try toachieve them. A person needs to apply minimum efforts to acquirebasic needs like food, which creates satisfaction. However, luxuriespromote happiness but are expensive to achieve, and should beavoided.

Isupport the Epicurus’ statement that the body should not besubjected to pain in pursuit of good or happy life. Individuals arerequired to ensure that their body is at peace and healthy as theyattempt to satisfy their needs. Epicurus was quantitative because hedetermined pleasure in consideration of its intensity and lifetime. Iagree with his teachings that external factors such as consumerismhinder the acquisition of happiness. Consumerism is a practice thatsubjects individuals into recurrent shopping and then exposes them todebts. Many people are likely to use their credit to purchaseunnecessary things when influenced by consumerism. Epicurus arguesthat some individuals think that impulse buying can promotehappiness, but end up experiencing pain. Supportive friends areimportant because they assist in solving life issues. Positiveadvertisement and media coverings about consumerism initiateindividuals to acquire expensive things with the belief that theywill be happy. As a result, people incur high spending, but fail toachieve the happiness they were seeking. Material possession orwealth cannot create happiness in the absence of friends.

Epicurus further emphasized the need for an analyzed life, which isbalanced to ensure that happiness and satisfaction are attained atthe end. I support his suggestion because people who have an analyzedlife focus more on creating friends, and are likely to enjoy theirfreedom. The desire for material possession leads to depressionbecause most people fail to achieve their goals. It is important tobalance everything for happiness to be attained. According toEpicurus, freedom is an aspect that makes people financially free. Isupport the fact that freedom enables people to have time for theirfriends and influence the quality of life.

In conclusion, Epicurus’ argument on good and happy life is valid.Necessary things such as food are naturally easy to get, unlikedesires like wealth. The affordable and basic items needed to satisfyan individual`s life influence happiness. Elimination of fear andpain promotes good life and happiness.
