The United States is privileged to have some of the greatest leadersin world history. Historical events have shaped the leadership traitsof the presidents of the United States. The focus of the discussionis to evaluate President Abraham Lincoln and John F Kennedy withregard to their achievements, historical environments, and theirleadership skills.
Achievement of President Abraham Lincoln
President Lincoln signed the Homestead Acts that would allow poorpeople obtain land, in the year 1862. Freed slaves, women and personsover the age of 21 could file for an application to own federalgrant. Abraham Lincoln ended slavery in the US by issuing theEmancipation Proclamation. Finally, President Lincoln signed theNational Banking Act in the year 1863 creating the bank system in theUS.
Achievementof President John F. Kennedy
President Kennedy played a pivotal role in taking the United Statesout of recession when he took over power. Under his leadership, hesteered the tax reforms, maintained inflation at a steady rate of 1%and helped grow the GDP by 2.2% per annum. President Kennedyadvocated for civil rights for African Americans through his supportfor racial integration. During his tenure, the president signed anexecutive order that would ensure the adoption of affirmative actionby all government contractors in the year 1961.

Presidents Kennedy and Lincoln were in leadership under differenthistorical settings. President Lincoln took power at the time whenslavery was at its peak in the United States. However, Lincoln tookthe responsibility of ending slavery in the United States through theEmancipation Proclamation in the year 1863. It resulted in freeing ofslaves and the eventual abolition of slavery in the United States.This was a crucial decision in the history of the United Statesbecause it would result at the end of the slave trade.
John F. Kennedy was elected to office during the brink of the startof a nuclear war. However, under his leadership, the president wasable to hold negotiations with the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchevending the Cuban Missile crisis on October 28th, 1962.President Kennedy agreed to remove the nuclear missiles while theSoviet Union agreed to dismantle their weapons.

President Kennedy can be described as a brave leader who wascompassionate. His compassion for the people was depicted when he ledhis fellow navy men safety. It is a reflection of the fact that hewas a leader who thought of others as part of him and this wasreflected in his public persuasion skills ("All Presidents |C-SPAN Survey On Presidents 2017"). This was later confirmed bythe signing of an executive order that would mandate governmentcontractors adhere to the affirmative action. Further, he identifiedthe need to recognize the individual effort of everyone regardless oftheir color or creed. This would later be confirmed by hispresidential agenda of ensuring that all workers in the United Stateswere treated fairly. President Abraham Lincoln,on the other hand, was equally compassionate. It was under hisleadership that he allowed the poor people to acquire land contraryto what was expected. He was focused on ensuring that there wasequality identifying the need to uplift the less fortunate in thesociety. His focus on developing the entire nation because hebelieved in unity. Lincoln’s performance within the context oftimes scored highly ("All Presidents | C-SPAN Survey onPresidents 2017"). The leadership skilldepicted by John F. Kennedy was commitment. The United States wasable to overcome the recession because of the president’scommitment to revive the economy. Abraham Lincoln presented theleadership skill of responsibility where he resort to ensure thesuccess of all Americans regardless of their status. It is for thisreason that he introduced the Emancipation Proclamation to endslavery because he acknowledged the rights of people who were slaves.
