April 28, 2020

MANAGEMENT 1

Description of My First Impression

One of thecountries that I have always yearned to visit is Mexico. The placehas always been my dream country to visit since tender age. I had aflight to Mexico, and my first place to land in was in Isla Mujeres. The island is beautiful, and Mexican restaurants surrounded it.People visit the island from different areas, as it is more of atourist destination. The individuals on the island have differentcultures. The essay will discuss my experience in Mexico during myfirst visit.

Explanation on the Immediate Reaction

Under normalcircumstances, it is expected that the areas that have people fromdifferent cultures use a common language that is familiar to allpeople. Most of the countries or the sectors that act as a touristattraction mainly use English. Even though the place lookedbeautiful, I was much frustrated as most of the people ranging fromthe waiters to the tax drivers were addressing me using Spanish. Atfirst, it was frustrating as I thought they had a high level ofignorance and assumption. I thought the reason behind them usingSpanish is that most of the tourists were from America and they havea basis in speaking Spanish. Thus, their assumption made the Mexicansuse Spanish frequently. I took some time to respond to them, as Iknew nothing about the Spanish language. I talked to them in English, and they were remorseful for communicating to me in the Spanishlanguage.

What I Could Do Differently Given a Chance

Given theopportunity to make the visit to Mexico once more, I would first takemy time to have a clue about their culture and even learn someSpanish language. Understanding the cultural diversity can help indoing away with the injustice that results from the culturaldiversities. Understanding other people`s culture helps in anappreciating the culture. Thus, I could change the way ofcommunication and learn some basics of Spanish as this could make mycommunication easier.

Lessons Learnt from the Experience on Intercultural Communication

The experience inMexico is one of the most enjoyable. It has exposed me to the reallife experience of what it is about cultural diversity. Differentpeople have different cultures and since people have to interact, there is need to learn and appreciate other cultures (Oetzel,2008).The visit helped me in understanding the concept ofcultural diversity. The people who were visiting the country are fromdifferent backgrounds, and they had different cultures. The food andthe language that was used in the country were different from what Iwas used to in my native country. Communication is essential whenpassing information. Different cultures use different languages andsymbols to communicate (Oetzel,2008). Communication can be challenging if the people are fromdifferent cultures. From experience, I came to realize that as aleader, one should be ready to learn skills from other culture as itcan lead to either strong bonds or conflict.

Conclusion

In conclusion, there is need to learn intercultural communication as thedemographics in the world are diversified, and one will alwaysinteract with them. If could have learned about the cross-culturalcommunications, it could have been easy to communicate with thewaiters and understand them better. An understanding of interculturalcommunication can eliminate the social injustice in the organization.
