Genderorientation or sexuality is one of the psychological issues ofconcern in the contemporary society. Sex identity disorder and sexismare some of the major challenges that need to be addressed. Althoughthe psychologists should be at the fore front of informing thesociety, they have been faulted to failing to effectively dischargethis role. The psychologists have been disseminating misleadinginformation regarding sexuality. Meaning, the psychologists havebeen failing to address the societal ills done to the sexuallydisadvantaged section of the community. This is why the cases ofsexual identity disorder and sexism still face many people.
Sexismis a type of discrimination to which the women, gays, lesbians, transgender, and bisexual persons are subjected. The society has beentreating these people with prejudice because they are perceived asunique and lesser important creatures. The women are thereforediscriminated upon and denied educational, employment, and leadershipopportunities (Barlow, 2012). For example, some employers have beenaccused of discriminating the lesbians, women, and gays regardless oftheir qualifications. It is immorally wrong to do so because everyoneshould be given equal treatment irrespective of their diversities.
Psychologistsshould use their expertise to address the cases of sexism in thesociety. as professionals, the psychologists should equip the publicwith accurate and well-researched information on sexism, gender bias, and homophobia. Many people have been engaging in such discriminatorypractices because they are not aware that it is a bad and evil thingthat does not benefit the society in any way (Barlow, 2012).Psychologists are influential people whose advice and caution shouldbe treated with lots of seriousness.
