GLOBAL HEALTH 1
Nigeria in the African continent in the country I chose. In recenttimes the country has witnessed conflicts emanating from the BokoHaram extremists. Their actions have led to war between thegovernment and the Muslim leading to the displacement of people fromtheir homes into refugee camps and other areas not covered by theextremist group ("Boko Haramthreat warning ahead of summit – BBC News", 2017).
According to WHO report (2017), government hospitals have beendamaged completely or partially during the war rendering medicalhealth unavailable to the common citizens of the country. UnitedNations through world health organization has established mobilehealth programs under tree clinics to provide health services to thepeople. I have deployed to the clinic as the lead nurse.
To ensure teamwork among the nurses, I will assume a conveyerbelt-like structure in the services administration. As the patientsarrive at the center, they will meet the first nurse forconsultation, and then move to the second nurse for screening andprognosis. The third step will be to provide prescription andissuance of drugs to the patients.
A major challenge in the northern region of Nigeria is languagebarrier. To ensure efficiency in communication between the patientand the nurses, the team will contract a local person to assist intranslation from native language to English
In the provision of the health services, the team will major on acuteissues affecting the population such as malaria in children andadults were the nurses would screen and offer prescriptions andguidance on the use of the drugs. Notably, malnutrition among thechildren is a major concern since basic meals are scarce. Thechildren below the age of fifteen will be given priority as they aremost affected by both malnutrition and malaria. These issues arevital to the survival of the children, and the entire population andfailure to provide would mean increased death rates in the statewhere the government agencies did not provide any humanitarianassistance.
Systems Specific Assistance
As a trained nurse, I will diagnose malaria in children below the ageof 15 years since there is need for more attentive care to childrenthan adult patients. I will, however, refer the acute malaria casesto the doctors for extensive screening and management. In addition tothe malaria management capacity, my camp has limited resources, andtherefore such cases can only be well contained by a doctor.
The conventional control method administered to the patients isguidance on personal hygiene. Since the acute respiratory syndromesare common, personal hygiene is the common way to tame its spreadamong the people. The advice I gave the people today is ensuring thatthey remain clean and put on clean clothes as well as put efforts inobtaining clean water for consumption. These provided the benefit ofreduced infections to fever, cholera and other possible outbreaks inthe camps (Um, 2012).
Assignments and Delegation
I will delegate to a volunteer the aspect of monitoring the drip anddrugs administration since they are easy to understand and avolunteer with little training can manage.
The common orders among the patients will be food supplements sincemost of them and especially children under the age of fifteen sufferfrom malnutrition. Our team will always come with as much food as itcan afford to carry each time we visit our shelter clinic. Throughthe local distribution channels, the team will acquire food suppliesto a general store in the camp. This helps in serving the populationbetter by providing the food ratio and other essential supplies theyrequire on a daily basis. Also, we will employ the Red Cross servicesto deliver drugs to the patients in their camps and with securityfrom the state.
In response to the people who have lost their property and lovedones, counseling, and guidance on acceptance of the situation andsubsequent actions needed to keep life moving in a positive manner.
When the patients are healed, psychological counseling follows wherepost traumatic disorders such as low self-esteem, emotional numbness, avoidance of people and loss of temper are identified. Afteridentification, the patients ought to be put under care andcounseling for a period to ensure that they fully recover.
Nurses, volunteers, and physicians will develop anxiety due todealing with the patients. This will be as result of listening totheir suffering and working for long hours. To counter this, thenurses, physicians, and the volunteers will receive trainingprocesses in addition to being allowed time off-duty. Trainingreduces such anxiety and helps physicians isolate themselves from thetrauma suffered by the patients.
Given the condition of the shelter with no privacy in serviceprovision, the patients outside may have access to the diagnosisbeing provided to other patients. Moreover, the patient’sinformation will be obtained by the record maintained in the shelter. The facility will keep records on the malaria prognosis, prescription, and management plans. These records will be collectedand maintained at a central point by the nurse appointed as a clerk.
Violence and Abuse
According to the report provided by the United Nations, Boko Haramare claimed to operate in the camps that kidnap and or steal medicalsupplies from the humanitarian groups operating in the war-toneregion of Nigeria.
Culture and Religion
Most of the people in the camps are Muslims whose faith is completelydifferent from the humanitarian groups available. The challengepresented by this culture is that only female nurses can examinefemale patients hence giving the female nurses a hard time due to thehigh female population in the region. Female mature patients shouldnever remove the veil for men to see hence becoming a challenge tothe male group in the service provision. Handling a patient in theMuslim faith require careful choice of words especially fromChristian belief.
1.The global fund for fight Aids, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
2.World health Organization (WHO).
3.Joint United Nations Program on HIV/HIVS (UNAIDS).
4.World bank which funds the organizations that deal with health issuesaround the globe.
For a nurse to join any of these organizations, he or she can beginas a volunteer which is the common path or apply for the job throughthe organization’s websites.
War in any country should be prevented at all cost since theconsequences are felt by the innocent civilians. The humanitariangroups provide help to the suffering populations, but this cannotrestore the peace and prosperity these people had before the war.Loss of life, suffering, and displacement of these people bringsuntold suffering.
