Mythsabout immigration have become common in the United States. The highnumber of immigrants witnessed in the country has influenced theexistence of several immigration myths. The paper evaluates one ofthe immigration myths and its possible impacts.
The immigration myth to be discussed argues that immigrants havecontributed to the rise of crime and violence in the towns andcities. Public figures assert that immigrants are criminals bringingcrime to America. According to the myth, Native Americans are lesslikely to engage in crime or incarcerated (Southern Poverty LawCenter, 2015). The fact is that immigration does not correlate withcrime increase and, therefore, the immigrants are less likely to beincarcerated.
The myth might negatively affect my teaching job because I will beseen as an incompetent individual. The public and private educationsectors are likely to deny me employment if they consider the myth(Southern Poverty Law Center, 2015). Americans will not becomfortable to enroll their children in a school that I will beteaching due to the fear that they will be ruined. The myth mightcost me my job, which is my source of income.
In my classroom, I would inform the students about the fact of themyth. I will ensure that a positive image is developed concerning theimmigrants. I will use real life examples and data to prove thatimmigration does not influence crime increase. As a teacher, I willuse the students to spread the facts across the country and ensurethat the myth is eliminated.
Teachersinteract with individuals who are likely to change the country infuture. As a result, they are required to be critical consumers toensure that they deliver positive information to the students. Forinstance, teachers should spread the facts about the myth to ensurethat the public changes its perspective on immigration.
Inconclusion, myths have a negative impact on specific individuals inthe society. Strategies need to be developed and implemented toeliminate myths. Ill statements and false information have beenspread across America that cause victimization of the immigrants.
