Theoffice of the president in the United States and many parts of theworld attracts intense analysis. They exhibit higher integrity thatalso determines the performance. The United States as the worldsuperpower and leader in many issues that touch on economic, socialand political aspects, hence, attracts interests beyond the locallevel and at the international or global level. The Presidency, hence, as a symbol of leadership and country attract public scrutinyglobally as a result of their performance. However, this paperanalyses the performance of the current US president Donald Trump. Itnotes how the relationship of the United States with other nations aswell as the president relationship with congress is deteriorating.
PresidentTrump victory is described as one of the shocking not only to the UScitizens but also the world as a whole. It is because of the contrastthat opinion polls had indicated that gave Trump minimal chance ofvictory in the elections. His campaign slogan of ‘making Americagreat again’ had left many nations in the anxiety of what reallywas meant by the clause and kept nation guessing on the next step andimpact of his victory. However, during his inauguration speech, Trumpemphasized on his belief and stated categorically that anything theydo they would prioritize America and it will only be America interestthat will supersede other interests when dealing with other nations. The relationship with other nations under Trump short leadership hassoured and is deteriorating (Peterson par. 7). For example, hisemphasis on building a wall across the Mexican border and compellingMexico to pay for that wall led to tensed relationship with thecountry. Additionally, Mexicans and other illegal immigrants livingin the United States being used as a diversionary to Americansproblems such as unemployment, crime, and drugs also souredrelationship with other Nations. Trump, moreover, is championing forrenegotiation of NAFTA agreements that angers member countriesinvolved. Trump also signed immigration executive orders that made itdifficult for people from other nations to come to the United Statesand in particular specific seven Muslim-majority countries thatcaused uproar not only among citizens of the world but also the UScitizens. It led to mass demonstrations and protests including fromhis republicans. Russia recently criticized the US after the US underthe order of Trump bombed a military base in Syria for allegedlyusing chemical weapons (gas) on its citizens. It says that the USviolated the international law and the bilateral agreement that theyhad about controlling and intervening in the Syria airspace. Suchactions, thus, have made it difficult for nations to freely interactwith the US and, thus, nations are keenly watching and weighingoptions before they engage with the US fully. The relationship withother nations, hence, is deteriorating under Trump leadership(Peterson par. 5).
Trumphad a great relationship with congress at the start. His republicanparty controls the majority in both houses that led to Paul Ryanchosen as the house speaker. However, the relationship presently isdescribed as fragile where some republicans and inner cycle membersof Trump have openly disagreed with his ideas, actions, and policies(Raish par. 5). The deteriorating relationship has been brought bythe president’s unilateral acts and decision that uses thepresident executive orders. It eliminated or locked out the congressmember’s contribution in such critical matters such as of theimmigration and refugees concerns. Some Political analysts note thatunless Trump learns the ‘language’ of the congress, his policiesand actions would attract more resistance and opposition making hisleadership challenging to fulfill promised pledges (Draper par. 12).
InWashington, things are getting done by but at a slower pace as it isstill in the transition stages. For example, senior appointments inthe office have been made and some are yet to fully occupy the officesuch as Reince Priebus appointed the chief of staff among other keypersonalities. They would ensure the transition is completed andTrump team fully takes over the control and the presidency.
Inconclusion, the current president relationship with other nations isdeclining that might have negative impacts in the economic, social aswell as political fields. International relations are critical in theglobalized world due to the numerous benefits that result from suchrelationship at both bilateral and multilateral levels. The currentpresident relationship with the senate is also worsening that wouldgive the president a hard time to fulfill his promises to the people. It would require the president to involve the congress in many issuesrelated to decision-making to improve the relationship.
