The article by Bell Hooks was written to encourage the poor and theworking class to maintain strong ties with their community membersafter education. As discussed by theauthor, education works greatly to undermine one’s humblebackground (Hooks10). Conversing with a simple language and discussing one`s ignorancemakes one appear less educated. Consequently, separation from familymembers and adoption of new communication styles and behaviors can beattributed to one’s relationship with individuals who considerthemselves ‘highly educated.` The writer urges learners not to beblindfolded by education to become radical and forget their reallife. I agree with the author’s statement, as most individuals aftergraduating and employed in reputable positions rarely like beingassociated with their poor backgrounds, as they feel ashamed. Onethe author’s student admitted that he hated the poor people, as hisfather was a beggar. The author urges individuals from poorbackgrounds to be open-minded and face the existing challenges boldlyin order to eliminate stereotyping that has existed especiallybetween white and African American races (Hooks20).

Students’ from the affluent families are able to lead lavishlifestyles such as driving expensive cars, living in costly housesand attending entertainment areas frequently. Students who originatefrom humble backgrounds such as Hooks strive to meet their basicneeds while pursuing education, a situation that creates classdifferences. As described by the author, materially underprivilegedindividuals are perceived to be less intelligence and of less valuein the society. The statement indicates that differences in materialpossession cause separation amount students due to varied views.

The statement indicates the people shouldnever forget their past. Individuals encounter many problems whenfighting for their freedom. Remembering one past provided areflection of a particular group’s value and courage. During thecolonial period, the minority groups who were assimilated wereutilized in the farms and industries. They felt less valuablecompared to the current days.

Hierarchicalinstitutions dominated by class, sex and race greatly influence themindsets of individuals who originate from the poor individuals.People attend schools in order to accomplish their dreams. In mostinstances, the environment tends to be deceptive, where someindividuals exhibit high standards of living craved by the poor. Allhumans beings want to feel special, but in order to interact with thestudents from rich families, one has to adopt their behaviors. Unconsciously, one begins to change the ascent and associating withpeople who are regarded as workers. The environment and people oneinteracts with trigger various changes.
Question#5: Assimilation and Acceptance
By assimilation andacceptance, Hooks means that due to devaluation exercised among theminority group, one lives uncomfortably. Assimilation enables one tobe identified by particular individuals and status. Nevertheless,assimilation hinders one from personal development and interactionwith people of one class.
