PersonalStatement: Becoming a Teacher
Teaching is a process that needs the teacher to understand the needsof the students before introducing the lesson. Often, the studentstend to view mathematics as a boring subject that lacks the issuesthat they love. However, the teaching techniques can change suchmentalities and ensure that the students appreciate the lesson.Urging the students to work in teams and using colorful presentationcan reveal how math is interesting. This essay will explain thetechniques such as role playing, real-life problems and group workthat can make math more entertaining and educative too.
In the past, I did not have the right mindset to learn mathematicsand that was because of the negativity associated with the subjectand the fact that most students spread such stereotypic notions.Keeping such a mentality led to math being the hardest subjectbecause I did not make any extra effort to understand how to dealwith the complex arithmetic. One of my teachers even discovered thatthe math lessons were always dull and boring, and he decided tointroduce certain activities to make it more enjoyable. For instance, the teacher introduced role play concepts where the students had totake the role of bank tellers and served the clients while doing thenecessary calculations (Ingersoll et al., 34). He even asked thestudents to engage in revision activities so that everyone canidentify their mistakes. Discussing the assignments in pair was alsoanother approach that allowed comparison and advanced analysis of theconcepts. Hence, I will also use such tactics in making the mathlessons more entertaining and educative at the same time.
Introducing a new way of teaching often assists the students ingrasping most of the concepts presented. For instance, a teachershould always summarize the main points that will be taught and makesure that the students have understood everything. Besides that, Iwill always allow the students to play an active role in the lessonsand engage in solving some of the problems highlighted. Creatingreal-world problems can also help the students identify a specificway in which they will approach individual arithmetic challenges(Ingersoll et al., 32). The gaming environment is a perfect way ofmaking math more enjoyable and ensures that the students are focusedon improving their knowledge. Asking each student to present mathquestions and provide the calculations and the answer in front of theclass also enhances their participation in the setting and makes surethat they have the right mindset required.
In conclusion, improving the math lessons will be a perfect way ofensuring that the students do understand how to deal with theassignments presented. Clearly, math has often appeared as a dull andboring lesson, but, making it more presentable and educative helps incapturing the attention of the students. Clearly, the introduction ofthe role playing, and working in pairs is one way of ensuring thatthe students work as a team.
