Background:Many sports are played in set environments in sports. The three majorclasses are water sports played in the water track sports played inspecified track and field event sports played in a specified markedregion.
ThesisStatement: Of water, track and field event sports, track sports arethe most popular sporting activities in world championships.
Category1: Track Sports
Characteristic1: Track sports represent the actual spirit of world championships.
Trackevents represent competitors from almost every nation of the world:the developed, the developing and the underdeveloped countries. Italso provides the opportunity for the athletes to mix cultures fromdifferent parts of the world since nearly all countries canparticipate even with individual training. Track sports mainly dependupon individual training and do not need specialized trainers orfacilities to achieve. Some track sports include relay races,sprints, races, long distances and even cross country (TheInternational Olympic Committee, 2017).
Characteristic2: Many fans are familiar with track sports
Leadingtrack sports commentators would agree that various track sports arenot only popular in the Olympics, but also, they attract a huge fanbase. As it applies to other sports, the fan base is made of thecompeting countries or rather nations whose sportsmen and women arerepresented in the Olympics. As a result, the sport becomes athriller on the Olympic world stage with billions of fans andspectators glued to their television sets every time variouscompetitions under the sport takes place.
Characteristic3: Most popular sports people are from track sports
Someof the most popular sporting champions who are household names inmany countries of the world are winners in various track sports inthe Olympics and other major world sporting competitions. Forinstance, Usain Bolt of Jamaica, the many times 100-meter worldchampion has attracted fan base beyond the borders of Jamaica toother nations. Another example is Mo Farah, the Briton who has alwaysdominated the 5000-meter championships or the East African athletewho goes by the name David Rudisha. David always has excited peoplewith his unbroken record in 800 meters. In retrospect, it is evidentthat track sports are the most sensational and most interesting witha huge fan base.
Characteristic4: Track events schedules are distributed throughout the year
Trackevents have many competitions scheduled throughout the year having avery short period of rest. It means that the fans of track eventsremain entertained throughout the year. Track events have so manychampionship events that take place in different locations of theworld thus increasing the popularity of the event.
Thetrack events are such that they are not limited to a specific time ofcompletion. The events have a starting point and the finishing point.An athlete has to run from starting point to the finish point in thequickest time possible so as to secure a competitive position or evento win. The determining parameter in track event is the time taken torun from the starting point to the finish line.
Characteristic5: Track events are highly competitive with many sub-categories
Trackevent is very competitive such that it has so many competitors.Moreover, it has a variety of subcategories that give athletes a widerange of events to choose such as 100m, 200m marathon and much more.Track event is highly competitive not only as country versus countrybut also athlete versus athlete from the same country. For example,100m race has so many athletes from Jamaica and USA that competeagainst each other. The competitiveness makes the track event popularand fun to watch or participate in those events.
Characteristic6: Track events require heavy investment to be held
Littleamount of money is used when holding the events as compared to waterand field events. Therefore, despite the state of a nation, it canhold track events successfully without requiring large initialinvestment. Furthermore, a country that is landlocked or deserted canhold these land events, unlike other water events that might needoceans or even high level waterfalls. The track events do notnecessarily require high level facilities and this has made them verypopular. Secondary schools and primary schools hold their own trackevents with tracks marked directly on the ground. Due to the low-costrequirement, even at village levels, there exist these track events.
Category2: Water Sports
Characteristic1: Dominated by a few nations
Watersports, while common, at the Olympic level, the sport is dominated bya few nations such as the United States, Russia, China, Germany andsome other countries. It is rare to find Olympic representations ofwater sports athletes from Africa due to limited specialized trainingfacilities and trainers required to train the athletes.
Characteristic2: Major fan base come from representative nations
Watersportsattract a considerable number of fans which are mainly from thecompeting countries as represented in the Olympics. This implies thatwater sports are less popular compared to track sports.
Characteristic3: Less fanfare
Unlikethe case in the track sports, there is no much fanfare in watersports competition, and just like it is with field-event sports, onlya few sportsmen like Michael Phelps of the United States manage tomake a big name out of their water sporting career.
Characteristic4: Require swimming skills and much safety measure
Unliketrack and field events, water sports require specialized training toacquire skills of water survival. Moreover, safety is a key factor inwater events. The events pose risks to the athletes such as healthissues and even drowning that can lead to death, and hence manysafety measures have to be put in place including safety equipmentand costumes.
Category3: Field-Event Sports
Characteristic1: Part of Olympic sporting events for a long time
Fieldevent sports such as Discuss Throw, Decathlon and the others havealways been part of Olympics championships (The International OlympicCommittee, 2017) since time in memorial. In every Olympics in recentmemory, the sports have always been part of the Olympic competitions.Despite being part of the Olympics for a long time, track sportsovershadows field event sports’ popularity. Most of these fieldevents also need strong body physique and need hard body training.
Characteristic2: They have small group of participants
Likewater sports, they are characterized by few participants who aremajorly from the developed nations. As a result, they attract aconsiderable global attention but not as track sports does especiallyin world championships mainly in the Olympics.
Characteristic3: Most of the events require strong body physique and energy
Mostof the sports events in field events like Discuss Throw, Javelin,Pole Vault, and Hammer Throw require athletes with strong bodyphysique and energy since it involves carrying heavy weights andequipment. Athletes with small body physique rarely win such events,and if they win then, their bodies go through so much strain. Theevents also pose a risk of getting internal injuries to athletescaused by the heavyweights.
Characteristic4: Field-Event sports champions rarely become famous
Whileof course there are champions in the field-event sports, they do notmake big names that are well-known across the globe as athletes inthe track sporting events. In fact, it is quite difficult to recall achampion in the field event sports than it is to remember trackathletes like Usain Bolt.
Inconclusion, it is clear that there are many environmentally setsports, water sports, field-event sports and track sports are thethree major that most athletes all over the world participate. Of thethree, track sports are the most popular in the Olympicschampionships showing much competitiveness, having many athletesparticipating, and attracting big names in every sporting event ofthe competitions.
