Roleof Advertising
Thereare numerous advertisements on radio, TV, the internet, and thesubways. Businesses are using any possible forum to promote theirproducts and grow their sales. The five advertisements that I sawplayed the role of informing, influencing, and reminding.
Theads were informing potential buyers of the existence of theirproducts. They included information on the types of products thesellers were offering and their use. Such knowledge is vital inhelping the potential consumers connect with the relevant company andits brand. The targeted customers will then be in a position to makea choice on whether or not to purchase the company’s products.Informing plays a crucial role especially for new products that haveto compete against established brands for the same market.
Asfor the case of products where a significant proportion of theconsumers already have enough information, another aim of theadvertisement is to influence. The firms behind the advertisement ofsuch brands are keen on luring consumers into buying their products. Some of the companies portrayed their products as being superior tothose of their competitors. Their intention was to convince theconsumer to try their brand.
Anotherrole of the advertisements is to remind the market of the existenceof the respective product. Such reminders tend to enable information about the product to stick in the consumers’ minds. A memory of thebrand will assist in creating an urge among the consumers to purchasea given company’s product.
Clearly, the firms behind the products I saw had the intention of informing, influencing and reminding. Their hope was to get the consumers toswitch to their products. There is a need for advertisers to offertheir potential clients enough information on their products thatwould enable them to make an informed choice.
