Asearch engine basically uses specified keywords to search forinformation and returns all documents where keywords are found. Withthe increase in competition and more publisher content, the world ofsearch engines has seen rapid changes from just Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves and AltraVista that used to be. For purposes of thisassignment, we will review Bing, DuckDuckGo and Quora.
Witha market share of 15.8%, the Microsoft owned search engine that alsopowers Yahoo’s search engine is the second most popular searchengine in the world. Bing produces significantly better video searchthan any other search engine while also giving a grid of largethumbnails that one can click on to play or preview when hovered overthem. Additionally, Bing is best known for its many autocompletesuggestions than any other search engine thereby guaranteeing qualityresults and more relevant information (Ratcliff, 2016). Equallyimportant, Bing has a feature that highlights the best rankedoutgoing links from a site which helps a user to figure out the sitethat is most linked to it. Regarding how it indexes and organizes itsinformation, Bing is popularly referred to as a Decision Engine as itis designed to return search results in a format that organizesanswers to address the user’s needs. It uses spiders or crawlers toindex a website.
DuckDuckGois a search engine that does not profile users as it gives emphasisto protecting the privacy of users and does not use filter bubble andtherefore shows all users the same search results for any givensearch. Its privacy and customizability gives it an edge overcompetitors with straightforward and flexible privacy settings.Additionally, the search engine is fun with features with featureslike Instant Answer and also ‘!bangs’ which allows a user tosearch directly within a site from DuckDuckGo (Sentence, 2016).Similar to Bing, DuckDuckGo uses crawlers called DuckDuckBot to indexwebsites. As regards to how it organizes its information, DuckDuckGoemphasizes on getting information from the best sources rather thanthe most sources.
Quorais a search engine that is popular for question and answer platformthat is edited and organized by the community of users. Quora is bestknown for its unrivalled personal touch it affords its users. Quorais a knowledge indexing tool in the form of a database. The databaseis made up of questions, answers, posts, and reviews which all can beaccessed by entering any keyword into the search bar (Ruussel, 2013).All search results return previews. As regards to how it indexesinformation, Quora has developed its own algorithm to rank answers.
AComparative Test of the Retrieval Results from the Three SearchEngines
Forthe comparative test of the retrieval results from the three searchengines, I searched the topic U.S. Presidential Elections 2016 andfound the results below for each search engine. While Bing returned2.13 Million results and 8 suggestions, both Quora and DuckDuckGo didnot indicate the number of results returned or any suggestions.Additionally, while mot top results from Bing and DuckDuckGo werefrom similar sources, the top results returned by Quora search enginewere from very different sources. Overall, it evident that while thesearch results for Bing are related to the question, most results forDuckDuckGo are relevant while the results for Quora look irrelevant.
