Social Action Plan
Casesof sexual assaults and other social injustices have been on the rise.Even in the most respected profession like the military, they are notan exemption as seen in the case of Janet. Many cases have beenreported over time not only in sexual assault cases but other socialinjustices. Statics relating to some of these cold-hearted acts arefascinating and scaring raising a concern. It has been found thatthere is a huge over 26,000 cases related to sexual assaults in bothmen and women (Parks-Leduc,Feldman and Bardi, 2015).Out of this figure, the number of women who were sexually assaultedtakes the higher fraction as compared to men. Out of the actual rapecases, just a small portion of the matter is reported meaning most ofthe cases go unresolved.
Mostof the victims of these injustices and inhumane acts rarely getjustice. Others will continue to suffer in silence due to lack ofconfidence in taking a step and coming forward to report their casesand seek help. As a result, they continue to suffer physically, psychologically and even emotionally while their hearts continue toponder in vain (Parks-Leduc,Feldman and Bardi, 2015).The problem is that as the victims continue to suffer in pain andagony, the perpetrators of these callous actions continue to freelyenjoy life not knowing the much pain they have caused to others. Itis against the human rights and constitution, and these actions mustbe highly condemned.
Thereis the need for community and society to rise and take part inhandling these issues. As a counselor, there is a need to take thebull by its horn and come forward especially to help such victims ofsocial injustices who fail to get justice, or they continue to sufferfrom their traumatic experiences like Janet. By so doing it will helpthem to regain their identity and social position in the society andhave a sense of belonging.
Toachieve the goal as mentioned above as a counselor, I will take someactions which are but not limited to what is discussed below.
Oneof the steps I would take is to link the victims of injustices likeJanet, to the right organization that will help her get justice. Oneof such organization that I would refer and link Janet to is theOffice for Victims of Crime via the department of justice and otherwomen liberations groups like the National Organization for Women andRape and Incest National Network (RAINN). After the rape, Janetreported to the respective authority seeking justice, but she nevergot assistance. She can be guided to apply for help from other stateorganizations and departments. Such organizations have power andmuscles to pursue Justice on behalf of individual victims that theyrepresent. The groups act independently and cannot be manipulated bythe seniors in the military, and therefore justice can be pursued.
Inaddition to the above action plan Janet having gone through thepainful experiences that fateful night and later failing to getjustice can come up with an own initiative like a movement to bringout the voice of the silent victims within the military who resisttalking for fear of unknown. She can form her organization or amovement to encourage and educate women in the army and othervulnerable groups.
Theother thing I can pursue is taking individual responsibility andsubmitting such cases like this of Janet to the respectiveauthorities. It can be achieved by writing and officiallycommunicating to the officials, for example, Janet can write to theState Department of Justice through the defense department and alsoto the senate council informing them of her assault and failedjustice. They should not relent in pursuing justice and bringingthese inhumane acts to light.
Mymain action plan would be to serve as a link between the victims ofthe injustices like Janet with the right channel for them to getappropriate help and pursue justice. For me to achieve this, thefollowing steps shall be undertaken.
Theplan will involve the preliminary phase which is training. It wouldbe held at all levels within the military. The action aims atvolunteers within the army who would come forth to acquire knowledgeand skills in dealing with the victims of rape and other injustices. The victims will feel free in talking to their fellows within theministry who would bring forward their cries. The step is not aboutcreating awareness but training this entails putting emphasis onwhat is the responsibility of each part and the importance to complyaccordingly.
Thenext step is coalition building within all the stakeholders. There isthe need for an alliance between all the parties for the success ofmy plan the seniors, juniors, and individuals within the militaryneed to collaborate and corporate. In building coalition, I wouldconduct training at different levels within the military. Trainingdoes not need to be formal to encourage full participation withoutfear. After building the coalition, there is need to assess andimprove the accessibility. It can be achieved by policy modificationsto allow for personal care need for women who are victims of suchinjustices. In collaborating for changes, it needs to bring togetheragencies in domestic violence and sexual assault agencies and alsothe community.
Nothinggood falls on a silver plate, during the implementation process, Idon’t foresee it being a smooth journey. There are some underlyingchallenges and barriers I am likely to face. They are but not limitedto
Acceptance,I predict that it will not be easy for people to accept my planespecially in advocating the authorities where such atrocities arereported. The individuals in charge might feel as though they arebeing undermined and taken as if they are not performing as aresult, I anticipate that they will be deviant and opposing in a wayto my plan. They might end up criticizing my plan for no apparentreasons. That not-withstanding I will still press on until my voiceis heard.
Inaddition to the above challenge another barrier is the lack ofadequate finances to fund my plan and programs, and also my plancomes with a proposal to incorporate a training program in themilitary curriculum. The idea will be up to be opposed and criticizedthat it is not worth. Just like the way seniors handled Janet casewhen she reported she was even reprimanded and later referred to amental department who diagnosed her with the mental disorder. It wasa joking killer of the highest order. I hope that my plan will followsuit. However, in my plan, I will not rest as a professionalcounselor and will fight to the end applying the most valuableskills.
Theother setback I expect is that people will find hard to come forwardand let their voices be heard. Some causes for such being fear ofvictimization especially those assaulted in a given profession likeJanet. I anticipate that there will be challenges before they accepttheir situation and support me in the implementation of this actionplan.
