Humansexuality can be termed as the expressing sexual feelings and relatedintimacy between people with the aim of showing the fullness of lovebetween two different genders (Greenberg, Bruess &amp Oswalt 4).Through time, human sexuality has shifted from closed to open, andthe process keeps repeating itself. This may be different indifferent cultures in the world, but the core principles of Humansexuality remain universal and have the purpose of reproduction,love, and family. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyze thefactors that cause the rise and fall of openness in human sexuality.

Oneof the factors that have increased openness in human sexuality is theadvancement in technology. Until the Victorian era of the 19thcentury, there wasn’t any research related to human sexuality. Itwas considered off-limits by most scientists until the 20thcentury when technology developed to a great deal that gavescientists an opportunity to study the only thing that had for longbeen considered off limits. This has since then increased theknowledge about human sexuality and how often people are willing totalk about the facts about it.

Anotherfactor that has aided openness in human sexuality is the developmentof education and linguistics. This has helped researchers be able tokeep detailed documentation that is accessible by people fromdifferent cultures and ethnic groups. Also, the advancement ineducation and inclusion of sex education in the curriculums hasincreased openness in human sexuality (Greenberg, Bruess &amp Oswalt9). Teachers can talk about sexuality in classes and even at homeparents are spending more time talking about sexuality to theirteenage kids.

Expandingmedia is another reason why the 20thcentury has experienced a rapid change in attitudes regarding humansexuality. Media has played a great role in broadcasting and coveringof matters related to sexuality (Greenberg, Bruess &amp Oswalt 9).Sexual themes in films, television and, even music lyrics is a greatoutlet for sexual content thus making it more open than it used tobe. The dawn of internet in the 90s has also played a great role inthe openness of sexuality. People can access any information theyneed and communicate with each other online without necessarilymeeting in person. This shifts in attitudes about human sexualitytend to have a certain commonality. They all bring about an increasedopenness of sexuality. They change how people perceive their sexualattitudes and how often they talk about sex

Conclusively,Human sexuality has experienced shifts through history from been opento closed and back to open. But the 20thand 21stcentury has experienced the greatest changes in attitudes andperceptions about sexuality. People talk about sex more often thanever before. Sexual content can be easily accessed on the internetthus increasing openness in human sexuality.

“Diary of an Interesting Year” by Helen Simpson and “The Road”(2009)

When authors write a story, it reflects their wild imaginations aboutthe state of our social, economic, technological, environmental andpolitical issues on earth and how they can affect humans in one wayor the other. They have different inspirations of their stories, aswell. Short stories, novels and movie scripts are developed with agiven goal, through the development of certain themes that arecritical to the understanding of the story, and also in creatingseveral lessons, using different characters. Stories and movie filmsare always created on a certain plot and setting, and this gives theready a rough idea of what the author and the movie creator wants toaddress in the story and film. after one reads the story or watchesthe film, opinions on the setting, characters, and themes are mainlyaddressed. In this paper, we shall compare and contrast variouscritics of the movie, “The Road” and the short story “Diary ofan Interesting Year.”

Helen Simpson, the writer of the “Diary of an Interesting Story”and the writer of the movie “The Road,” Joe Penhall base theirstories on science fiction, drama, suspense and mystery in the waythey give the chronology of what unfolds as the story continues. Themain characters in the story and the film are clinging to what cankeep them alive. In the story, the narrator describes holding on to aman called “G” who offers her food in exchange for sex. While onThe Road, the man, and his son, hold on to a gun with two bullets,and the scavenged food they are pulling on a cart. This illustratesthat there is very little that these characters can depend on forsurvival. This mastery has been used by both writers to develop thevarious themes that they are addressing in their stories.

Both the movie, “The Road” and the short story “Diary of anInteresting Year” are based on the issue of climate change,apocalypse and cannibalism. They base the plot and the settings asgloomy, hopeless, and full of chaos. They give an illustration of howman is trying to survive in the world without food. The story and thefilm are very vivid in the description of the desperation of humansas they try to survive in the disaster-stricken earth. They haveturned against each other, and become enemies to each other becausedue to lack of food, they start hunting each other for food. Thestory and the film give the audience of an idea of how apost-apocalyptic world can look like. It is scary to many, and it isclear through the characters that they prefer to be found dead otherthan alive.

Both the story and the film, connect with the audience by setting anemotionally intense atmosphere in the way the events unfold. Theylink the real world challenges that we are facing with the story andgive an idea of what could happen when humans do not care for theirenvironment. The attention of the audience is captured throughalternating settings, the use of flashback and dialogue. The authorsmake sure the audience feel that they are part of what is going on,by engaging them psychologically and emotionally. That way, it iseasier for the audience to capture the different themes that arebeing addressed in the process. The writer of the story and thedirector of the film also intensify the heartrending poignancy. Thisenables them to remain focused on the story lines without capturingthe unnecessary attention from the sideshows that do not addsignificance relevance to the story or rather help in building themain themes.

Helen Simpson writes her short “Diary of an Interesting Year” inthe first person. She gives her experience during thepost-apocalyptic period in England after climatic disaster strikesthe earth in 2040 (Platt et al. n.p). The movie, “The Road” isnarrated in second person. The movie director assigned roles tocharacters to give a reflection of the occurrences after a majorclimatic disaster in the United States. Many critics considerSimpson’s story as biased because she is involved in it, and she isthe one giving the narration of the events. The view is that it lacksoriginality, for it adopts the many literary styles that have beenused by many authors of science fiction. Some critics consider herestory as a “cliché” because there is nothing different shedescribes in the story apart from the obvious occurrences that havebeen described by other authors (Lezard n.p). Other critics have alsodescribed that the difference in Simpson’s story is the fact thatshe adds the female character in the story which is enslaved by men.They view the story as being too obvious.

The film, on the other hand, adopts the two categories of the threethat is seen in most apocalyptic movies “What if this reallyhappened” and “This is really going to happen” (Bradshaw n.p).The film is created in the way that the events look so stunninglyreal, and it grips horror in the process. Supposed the nightmarishworld comes definitely, the concept of struggle would be real, andthe living will start envying the dead. The film crafts it very wellto the audience that when push comes to shove in the world of theliving struggling in the world with nightmares, suicide wouldeventually be the only thing that would be in someone’s mind(Bradshaw n.p). This option is, however, assessed and deferred momentby moment, hour by hour. These elements as depicted in the film givesus the glimpse of originality in the film, and what differentiates itfrom other horror films.

Simpson’s story is written in the form of a diary, that describesthe chronology of events as they occur. She gives records ofoccurrence that occur in distinct days. To most readers, they find itdifficult to connect the story, very well. Simpson is rather personalas she writes her story and she omits the horrific elements and toomuch science fiction. She rather gives a vivid description of thepersonal experiences with the people she encounters with (Kakutanin.p). She doesn’t seem to be hopeful in any way in her story. Sheincludes in her story the element of gender and their roles in thesociety and invites her readers to join her in navigating the riskysociety. The movie, on the other hand, is a more straightforwardstory that unfolds events inform of a complete story (Sandhu n.p).The story is portrayed in a graphic way, to create a form of emphasison the themes of what can happen to an inter-personal relationship ifsuch occurrences happen. Penhall inscribes the element of optimismamong the audience because father and son are heading towards thecoast (Scott n.p). Although they are not certain what is wait forthem, they are optimistic that conditions are better. He omits theelement of gender in the story, but highlights on the issue of brokenfamilies and relationships in the story.

Shouldvideo game violence be censored?

Humanshave naturally been aggressive for as far back as history can betraced, wars and senseless violence have always been in existence.However, never in our historical existence have we ever bottled theseforms of violence in our entertainment. Today things have changed,and with graphically intense video games, children are now able tomake wars, murder and even rape and gets away with it as nobodybothers or pays attention to it. It is devastating and wreaking havocon the behaviors and emotions of our children. Violentvideo games lead to violent and aggressive behaviors, and theauthorities should censor the intensity of violence in these games.The effect of video games is far-reaching that one would imagine.Women are in most cases perceived as helpless victims and are throwninto these games as male fodders.

Videogames have been in existence for more than 30 years, and theirinfluence and negative impact has kept on escalating with time (&quotTheImpact Of Video Games | Media Information For Parents&quot). Thereis also the need for responsible parents to pay attention to therating of these games and if possible avoiding any form of a gamethat has a sense of violence. Video games allow players to becomepart of the game and with the increased level of sophistication,players now engage on a deeper physical and emotional level than everbefore(Ferenstein, Gregory).This is now a contributing factor to school bullying and shooting inour schools, not forgetting increased teenage sex and drug use. Thisdoes mean that children were angels before video games, but thesubstantial effect of these games is very high leading to childrenengaging in more violent and dangerous behaviors than before. Thecorrelation is so vivid that ignoring the causation is to beintentionally ignorant.

Videogame is a form of art a tool of free expression, but theultra-violent video games should not have a place in our society.While they can have positive effect such as inducing creativity butthey can also influence sociopathic behaviours in our children. Thisis why authorities should consider censoring the intensity ofviolence in these games to enhance a positive generation.
