Crash is a 2004 film directed by Paul Haggis and featuringprominent actors such as Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, and JenniferEsposito. The movie depicts the stereotypes that dominate humansociety through ethnicity and racial profiling.
Summary
In the movie, an Iranian man is presumed to be Arabic although he isPersian. The district attorney’s white wife views a Mexicanlocksmith as a violent criminal. However, the locksmith was apeaceful and responsible family man. An African American detectivealso maintains an adulterous relationship with a Hispanic woman.Subsequently, a white police officer assumes that a light-skinnedwoman can never be black.
The conflict occurs when an African American TV director claims thatanother black person does not sound like African Americans. Thisconflict occurs because the characters were unwilling to viewthemselves. The TV director was quick to make judgments about otherpeople without considering the implications. This conflict builds forthe climax by showing the fallacious outcomes associated with racialprofiling. A person who judged others would always condemn himself orherself. However, the conflict is never solved since the charactersmaintain their opinions throughout the entire movie.
Analysis
The maincharacters are a Caucasian district attorney and his wife, namely,Rick and Jean Cabot. Notably, the main characters are stronglyprejudiced against blacks and Latinas. Rick Cabot is conniving andopportunistic while Jean Cabot is ignorant and unreasonable. Rickwanted to attain political office in Los Angeles. In this regard, hewanted to take advantage of his power and position as a districtattorney. On the other hand, Jean wanted her husband to win theupcoming election so that she could enhance her status in society.Rick used race as a political ticket while campaigning for office.Jean justified her racist views of blacks and Latinas based on herprevious experiences. The theme of the film concerns the dangers ofracial profiling. The story shows the human tendency to judge othersbased on false premises. Several events can be cited to prove theproliferation of racial prejudice. For example, the white policeofficer used his power to harass African Americans. The districtattorney’s wife also labeled blacks and Latinas as violent andharmful. Hence, whites would avoid interactions with those whom theyperceived as dangerous.
Response
I liked the factthat the film was developed without bias or discrimination. In thisrespect, the filmmakers depicted the occurrences of racism across allraces and cultures. Blacks, Arabs, whites, and Latinas were allpredisposed to racial profiling. Furthermore, I liked how the filmportrayed people from different cultures. Each person was a victim ofmisconceptions and prejudgments. I also liked the realistic scenesadopted in the film since they appeal to human emotions and logic.Hence, viewers from different backgrounds can be positively impactedfrom the scenes portrayed.
Notwithstanding,I disliked the juxtaposition of many characters. It was quitechallenging to maintain a mental count of all the characters andtheir unique circumstances. Moreover, the film did not propose anymeasures to ensure the eradication of racial profiling. The movieseemed to show that humans were doomed to injustice anddiscrimination. The outcome was not satisfying due to severalreasons. Firstly, the film showed how all races were predisposed toprofiling. It would help to give some examples of how people thatwere previously prejudiced managed to overcome their biases.Secondly, the blacks and whites maintained their suspicious views ofeach other. It would have been proper to highlight the strugglesassociated with making prejudgments.
