TELEVISION ANALYSIS 5
The“Crash” is a film based on a people group who deal with extremeracism, and whose lives are intertwined. In the cast is a Caucasianattorney general, who himself is a racist, together with his wife, who is incidentally carjacked by two non-whites, and thus believesthat her prejudice is justified. The two male police officers engagein racism and discrimination with the Caucasian officer subjecting ablack American lady to body search (Haggis,2005).This is against the officer’s code of conduct and societalexpectations on work ethics. We see a detective who is black and hasa brother who is a criminal. This movie further shows the victims ofracism facing racial profiling and segregation, but at the same timealso that they prejudiced themselves in different contexts. Theignorance and misconception of these victims contributes to theircircumstances.
Thefilm has presents deviance on sociological concepts and cases ofracism, social class differences, gender inequality amongst manyothers. The sociological perspectives theories have been submittedclearly in this movie.
Theconflict theory of sociological perspective puts emphasis on thereason for cohesion and authority in ensuring social order. Thetheory indicates that the society needs conflict for it to be inorder. Its states that the society is divided into small fragmentsthat contest for resources available and that order is maintained bythe domination of those with power and having the biggest share ofthe resources. This has been shown in the scene where a Muslim man isdenied buying a gun, which he needs to protect himself with, in awhite man`s shop (Haggis,2005).With much prejudice, he is thought to belong to Al-Qaida extremistgroup, based on his social background, and ethnocentrism. It isprejudicial in the public opinion that those from the Middle East areconsidered inferior in comparison to the whites. It is alsoindicative that the black men involved in carjacking have limitedresources contrary to the whites full of abundance.
Moreover, the movie demystifies the functionalism theory, which states that thesociety should place the needs of the whole society over the needsand demands of an individual. However, deviance is in full play asthe society is represented as full of people with personal interestsrather over the needs of the society. The district attorney is shownto look for a black person so as to reward him in public, in the bidto save his public image amongst the blacks. This scene shows thatthere are categories of people that have been created. The Persianman`s store is vandalized, and for any reason, it could be because hewas from the Middle East.
Furthermore, feminism theory, a contemporary one, and shows the status of womenand men in the society and strives to see a better place for thewomen. Inequalities have been shown in the movie to a great extent, demystifying deviance to at its core. The African American couple isstopped by police cops at night, being thought to be involved incrime, and the wife is sexually harassed, inappropriately frisked, and helpless as she is with no support from any quota. This is gendersegregation and alienation at its behest against the social norms.Again, violence against women has been shown where the wife complainsto the husband that he should have protected her against the whitecops, yet the husband thinks that he didn’t have any option, and atend, he ends up slapping the wife (Haggis,2005).
Symbolicinteraction sociological perspective indicates the meanings placed bypeople on behavior events and anything based on their historical orcultural background. This has been presented negatively in the filmwhere people hold dearly their background beliefs contrary to thefact that they fall short of requisite moral threshold. For instance, where the policeman frisks the woman, the partner chooses to sidewith the couple and conversely, this is considered deviant as he istermed a rebel because of his ideological stand. He chooses to remaincalm and act in a modest way with decorum.
Likewise, sociological perspectives as they help us in the understanding of thesociety, its structure, demographics and social constructs. There aremany elements of the society such as the family, religion and othersocial structures that are part of sociology. Sociologicalperspectives help understand the components and the structuring ofthe society (Haggis,2005).Consequently, civic competence is of an essence and studying textssuch as these helps in shaping this. The attorney is shown to beincompetent, and his case would help shape this aspect of the societyand is critical in reflection to the civic leadership.
Therefore, sociological perspectives help the society in determininginterdependent aspects of the society. It can be understood that thesociety is complex and its success is hinged on synergy and cohesionamong the different people, ages, races and social constructs of thecommunity. The movie “Crash” demystifies the nature of society, its composition and the characteristics that make up a society havingdifferent races and beliefs. The movie has also used the phenomena ondeviance to depict diverse sociological perspectives of the society.
