The Effects of Immigration Ban
TheEffects of Immigration Ban
Immigrantsare people who flee from their mother countries into differentdestination countries and settle there. These immigrants mainly fleetheir home countries due to harsh conditions such as persecution andpoverty. They anticipate obtaining fair treatment and opportunitiesfor self-improvement in the destination countries. They aim to getemployment, and some lose the interest in returning to their mothercountries as they hope for permanent settlement. Research illustratesthat immigration has beneficial effects on both the immigrant and theeconomy of the destination country. On average, immigration haspositive economic impacts to both the native population and theimmigrant population. Critically, immigration ban may cause adverseeconomic effects on both the country implementing the ban and theimmigrants themselves. This shows that immigration ban can be verydisastrous. This paper illustrates the effects of the Trumpbanto both the country of America and the banned countries.
TheAmerican president Donald Trump placed an executive order to stallthe American refugee program and banning the entry of citizens fromspecific countries that are perceived predominantly Muslim. Theaffected countries include Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Libya, Iran, Sudan, and Iraq. The immigration ban bars citizens of the stated countriesfrom entering into America for three months. This ban also barsrefugees’ entry into America for four months. Refugees of Syrianorigin have been banned indefinitely. The ban that was instituted inJanuary this year has revoked over ten thousand foreigners’ visasoutside and inside the American country. America receives aroundninety thousand nonimmigrants who temporarily visits the country forvarious reasons. The ban, therefore, is likely to affect businesstravelers who visit the country for business purposes, internationalstudents enrolling in United States programs, temporary workers, aswell as Fiancés of American citizens. Students who would normally beallowed to travel home and re-enter the country have been highlyaffected so long as they belong to the seven included countries(Stone& Wadman 439-440). The illustration of the affectedindividuals by the ban explicitly shows that the ban will facilitatethe occurrence of catastrophic impacts on America.
Theimmigration ban has gathered widespread criticism from businessleaders, humanitarian groups, and religious leaders. The presidenthas however defended the ban citing it as an important step aimed atprotecting the American citizens from terrorism threats. The banprovoked many protestors who held demonstrations in various airportsall over the country to show solidarity with the detained travelers[CITATION McC17 l 1033 ].Mark Zuckerberg the Facebook CEO and Sundar Pichai the Google CEO areamong the prominent people who have publicly expressed their views onthe order. Their comments regarding the order express the widespreadfears that the business community could fail to attract talents, which of course might discourage investors as they discount thecredibility of America as a place of business investment.
Ina broad view, the immigration ban is inhumane and portrays somesought of radicalism from the American president [CITATION Reg17 p 10 l 1033 ].Trump’s immigration policies are questionable for various reasons.First, the economic strength of America isbased on attracting the brightest and the best to come and engage inbuilding a better future. America offers a competitive advantage, which is reflected in the entire economy. America is a home ofopportunities, which attracts individuals from various parts of theworld to come and pursue their dreams in America because they believein the American brand. For example, students from various countriesgo to study in America because they trust the quality of Americaneducation system. This means that with the ban, many students will bedenied this fundamental opportunity. Second, American economyprophesy is based on openness, friendly, and competitive society. This is what has made the economy of America strong and a home ofbusiness innovation. Therefore, the current American president isdestroying the American image as a symbol of hope for talentdevelopment.
Followingviews from various experts, the ban will make America appear a toughplace for conducting business. The order goes contrary to whatAmerica stands for and what America is. Many people find the orderunacceptable for various reasons. Specifically, the order affectscompanies that have employed individuals who have been included inthe category of the ban. Many companies employ people who havespecial visas and refugees. This explains who Americans are. Therefore, the order seems to go against the beliefs and prophesy ofAmerica as a welcoming nation. In addition, the order comes at a timewhen there are speculations of possible restrictions including atwenty percent tariff on Mexican imports. These issues seem to ruinthe reputation of America thereby discouraging business investment. This is because many speculate that America is going to be a toughplace for conducting business activities. In addition, companies thatdo not carry out risk analysis are likely to experience many lossesin terms of loss of workforce, which might discourage production. Theorder also negatively affects business recruiters. It spills fear asto whether America is going to be a tough place to obtain a qualityeducation. From an expert point of view, the image of America as aleading country in the provision of quality education has beentainted. Several institutions of higher learning have voiced theirconcerns regarding their students from the targeted seven countries. These criticisms are ruining the American culture of welcomingforeigners.
Inaddition, the immigration ban order will adversely affect both thedoctors and patients in various hospitals across the country ofAmerica. Around three hundred professional doctors and nurses workingin America from the banned countries are likely to be affected.Doctors from the said countries may fail to practice in U.S due tothe order timing this is, however, likely to continue as the orderimplementation continues. Hospitals might, experience a shortage ofdoctors and nurses, which poses a major threat to health care [CITATION Mas17 l 1033 ].Apatient, will thus be highly affected prompting fears of failure toobtain adequate medical care and increased health bills. In additionto effects of the immigration ban on health care, the ban will alsoadversely affect the field of research. The ban will interfere withresearch, as it will affect researchers` international conferenceswhere researchers from various parts of the world assemble tofacilitate the exchange of scientific ideas (Ardehali ). Travelrestrictions incorporated in the order are likely to interfere withcrucial scientists’ collaborations, which specifically affectingresearchers from the banned countries.
Inconclusion, the immigration ban by American President Donald Trumpposes various negative impacts to both the USA and the immigrants. The order will affect students, businesses, health care as well asthe field of research. Several questions remain unanswered. Did Trumpconsult the necessary stakeholders before making this decision? Ifso, what does the ban mean for the future of America? These are someof the questions that are lingering in the minds of many as theeffects of the ban have started to be felt.
