Whenan educator creates an organizational structure that groups ideaslogically, they encourage students to think and write fluently. Awell-organized introduction helps to streamline the flow of ideas inthe body of an essay. It saves on time that would be usedbrainstorming and exhausting one idea one after the other as onewrites on. It also makes the text easy to read and understand.
Theonly way to measure how well a student has crafted an introductoryparagraph for a persuasive essay is by administering to them an essaytest. This is one among the four methods of formal assessments. Theeducator can approach the process of administering the essay test intwo ways. First, they could give a general topic to the whole class,state an opinion and create an organizational structure that allstudents would adhere to when writing the essay. This would enablehim or her to access each student’s capacity to develop contentunder the same structure. Secondly, they could encourage each studentto form their own essay topic and craft a structure for theirintroductory paragraph. This would enable him or her access eachstudent’s content organization skills (The Glossary of EducationReform, 2017).
Itis reasonable to use summative assessments for instructionalplanning. Summative assessments include tests, assignments andprojects that students write at the end of a learning term. This isone of the best ways to determine the degree of learning that hastaken place throughout the course. Through observing test scores,educators would be able to understand the strengths and weakness ofthe each student in a particular discipline. They would also be ableto determine the strengths and weakness of every instructional partof teaching.
Testscores that show many students performing dismally in algebra couldmean that the method of teaching algebra is not effective. Forinstance, it could be plainly boring hence killing learnerenthusiasm. The algebra tutors would have to look for new methods ofteaching such as using practical examples in class or video tutorialsto get the students to be interested in the subject (Scholastic,2017).
Studentswho perform dismally where everyone else excels could be observed toget an insight into their learning capabilities. Effectiveinstructional planning that is diverse could later on be introducedto accommodate all students and improve overall performance.
Thejournal article dabbed ‘What is the difference between formativeand summative assessment?’ seeks to differentiate between the twomethods of assessments and their unique effectiveness. The formativeassessment monitors students’ learning and gives ongoing feedback.Instructors therefore use it to refine their teaching methods as theyabandon those that do not work. Summative assessments on the otherhand evaluate learning at the end of a course. They determine howmuch was learnt and how effective the instructional processes adoptedfor teaching were in a length period of time.
Accordingto the article, summative assessments “can be used formatively”when seeking to guide the activities and efforts in the subsequentcourses (Eberly Center, 2017). They work in dual capacity they helpevaluate the student learning and they help the educators improvetheir teaching methods and the instructional process.
Formativeassessments are described as ‘low stakes’ because they addressimmediate problems and student weaknesses in every section oflearning (Eberly Center, 2017). It is difficult to use them toimprove or even change teaching methods. However, they are effectiveenough to improve learning on an individual student basis.
