Why Steroids should not be used in Professional Sports
The debate on whether athletes participating in professional sportsshould be allowed to use steroids has gained momentum in recent yearsand has brought sharply divided opinions. Notably, steroids areanabolic substances that have the effect of enhancing the bodymuscles and perseverance, and they are usually used by some athletesacross the world to improve their performance (Johnson 959). Steroidshave been banned in professional sports for many years. Variousinternational organizations such as UNESCO have aired their opinionin the debate and have categorically disagreed with the option topermit the use of steroids in professional sports. It is essential tonote that the anti-doping laws that have been used to convictnumerous athletes across the world were established because the useof steroids is unacceptable.
Thesis: Despite the existence of strict anti-doping laws, athleteshave continued to illegally use these drugs unperturbed by healtheffects they have, the compromise they have on the integrity of thegames and the unfair advantage that some of the athletes using thedrugs have in profession sports competitions.
Research has indicated that steroids have devastating effects on thehealth of the athletes who use them. Whereas some advocates of thesedrugs argue that they can be advantageous if used according todoctor’s advice, there is no doubt that the athletes can hardly tosuch advice when the will to win is immense (Pampel 96). Medicalstudies have shown that the use of steroids has been linked to heartdiseases, tumors of the kidney, and effects on the reproductivesystem. Some of the physical health effects include the decline inthe size of the chest area in women and the reduction in the size ofthe male genitalia. These effects of the reproductive systems caneasily lead to infertility, low sperm count, and erectiledysfunction. Further, there are extensive medical studies that haveshown that the use of steroids can lead to prostate cancer. It isalso essential to note that there are many counterfeit steroids whosehealth effects are severe and devastating (Sharon and Jennifer 124).Oftentimes, athletes who use these drugs will not be able toparticipate in professional sports for long periods. In other words,it is important to note that the drugs can only enhance theperformance of the body for a short time the adverse effects start tobe felt. It is evident that the advantages that steroids might haveare few compared to the devastating health effects that their usemight have on the athletes.
Professional sports are expected to be respectful, fair, and havehigh levels of integrity. It is essential to note that professionalsports are not only about winning trophies or money, but they areabout respect and friendship. Sports have brought people togetherfrom across the world, and they have even been used to preach peaceand unity (Pampel 111). Unfortunately, the use steroids by someathletes have made sports to look like they are meant to declarewinners only. Whereas it is evident that professional sports areintended to be competitive, there is need to compete on neutralgrounds. Notably, steroids are not used by all the athletes, but byjust a few whose desire to perform exemplary is immense. As such, theathletes who do not use these performance enhancing drugs areunfairly disadvantaged since their chances of winning in anyprofessional sport are reduced significantly. The use of steroids bysome athletes has, therefore, led to them being crowned championsillegally or unfairly (Johnson 958). This implies that the spirit ofprofessional sports is also severely affected. Notably, some of theprofessional sports such as cycling or races are funded bymultinational companies such as Samsung or Nike, and any news ofsteroid use by some athletes can result in the cancellation of thefunding. Further, sports fans from across the world pay expensivetickets to participate in sports knowing that the best candidate willwin. However, when such enthusiastic fans realize that winners aredetermined by a number of steroids they have used, or they canafford, they are likely to stop buying the tickets. Therefore, it isevident that the use these performance-enhancing drugs can alsoquickly affecting the funding of sports across the world. Thisaffects the integrity of sports and affects the respect betweenplayers (Harkn 73). Various sports bodies across the world such asthe Olympics Movement, National Football League, and the WorldAnti-Doping Agency have all come out strongly to condemn the use ofsteroids due to the effect they have on the moral and ethical statusof the sport. Notably, one of the reasons why the World Anti-DopingAgency was formed was that the use of steroids was threatening theintegrity of professional sports. The use of theseperformance-enhancing drugs by senior athletes will affect thedecisions that the upcoming athletes have on whether to use them ornot. The young and future athletes are likely to use these steroidsif the strict anti-doping laws are not implemented fully to stop thispractice entirely.
The cost of steroids is another reason that should be relied upon toban the use these drugs in professional sports. Notably, some of thesteroids that the athletes use are extremely expensive and rare tofind. This is an indication that only the wealthy athletes will beable to afford them or even access them. It is important to note thateven if the drugs were to be legalized their prices would remainhigh since they use expensive raw materials to manufacture (Harkn70). Further, there has been an influx of counterfeit drugs in theblack market, and the upcoming athletes who cannot afford themedically approved steroids are opting to use these fake drugs. As aresult, their health gets severely affected showing some physicaleffects such as baldness and loss of weight after a few years.Notably, some of these fake drugs can lead to fatal ailments that cankill the sportsmen and women within five years especially when theyare used excessively. The use of steroids by some athletes pushes theother participants in professional sports to the limits, henceforcing them to use any means to acquire these drugs. It isinteresting to state that any attempt to allow the utilization ofthese drugs in professional sports would amount to competition on whocan buy the best steroids over who can compete well naturally.
While concluding, there is no doubt that the use of steroids inprofessional sports should not be allowed. Any attempt to allow theiruse would mean that the integrity and the spirit of sportsmanship arelost. Further, there are numerous empirically researched and approvedhealth effects of using steroids, which range from diseases, prostatecancer, to infertility. Accessibility and affordability of steroidsare not common to all athletes. Therefore, their use would mean thatsome of the athletes would be at an advantage to win all thecompetitions owing to their financial ability to purchase thesteroids.
